Organic means exactly what the USDA says it means. The USDA has little problem with genetically modified crops, or animals, for that matter. People need to know what they're buying rather than rely on a label that a bunch of hyped up news commentators and celebrities approvefor our consumption.
Its very hard to say something is truly organic these days. Even if you grow organic vegetables in your garden, is it truly organic? Are the seeds non- hybrid? Is the water used to supplement rain oganic(no flouride, chlorine, etc.)? Surely you didn't use pesticides. Is your fertilizer really oraganic, or did you use some of the manuer from your livestock that have ben fed a bunch of stuff? Hell evn rain water contains some nasty stuff(i.e. jetfuel!!!)
Everything we consume is genetically modified. We have been doing it for over 5,000 years. Creating hybrids, selective breeding, selective harvesting, doing everything we can to breed a better crops and livestock. All of that is done to create a plant or animal with superior genetics. Using labratory equipment to genetically engineer crops isn't the book on genetic modifications, it is just the latest chapter. For the life of me, I do not understand the fear of GMOs.
If these producers believe they can market their product and receive a premium for it, more power to them. However, many have tried before and found the premium for their specialty product was not enough to offset the increased production costs and decreases in productivity.

RE: When is organic not organic after all?
Thats funny. As far as organic goes, it simply means a compound of Carbon. Nothing more. Unless my organic Chemistry classes lied to me. The hype behind organic grown crops is kinda funny. If a plant gets its Nitrogen from a nitrogen salt or decomposing pile of $#!T, its still molecular Nitrogen, or is it????
I kinda like the idea of not haveing the fona of bacteria associated with decomposition, spread on and around the foods im going to eat.

Exactly.
Now those of you suggesting gene modification through vector transport, dont worry. The only produce I can think of that has been marketed that has been maniplated throughgenetic engineeringare some tomatoes. And if you come across some of these tomatoes, you will know. The lable sticks out like a sour thumb.

In another study on organic labeled vegetables vs. non-organic vegetables found that 80-90% of the vegetables labeled organic had detectable levels of pesticides. The study concluded that the pesticide was applied by middle men in order to preserve them during storage and shipment. But the study did say that the organic crops had lower levels of pesticide than non-organic. So all is not lost!
