Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

i worked in Nevada most of 05 and much of 06. i can now understand the concern of the citizens of Nevada. The problem comes down the road a few decadesafter theYucca mountain is stuffed full or radioactive waste. Some thrifty president and stingy congress decides they do not want to pay for the maintenance of the site and just abandons it. A highly radioactive dump site blew up in the Soviet Union several years ago and caused widespread devastation.

"By all means, truck tons of deadly radioactive waste to a RIVER near HUGE residential areas/cities. Under no circumstances should we consider a site that isin an already RADIOACTIVE DESERT andhas had $ Billions in study, excavation, and preparation spent on it."

With the stuff residing at the Savannah Riverthe politicians have no choicebut to pay for the proper maintenance of the storage site.

Then there's the incompetence factor: We had a few nuclear incidents in Wisconsin about 8 or 10 years ago when at least one concrete waste storage cask exploded and another leaked- near a river, near Lake Michigan, and near populated areas. The facility was poorly maintained.

What's worse? Trucking the crap to a site near a river or trucking and railing it over more than 8 states to a dump that has not been yet proven to be viable. Before anybody answers, the company I work for made the underground support system for the exploratory phase of that project, and we haven't shipped anything since then due to stoppages at the project site caused by unexpectedly weaker than expected strata and concerns of future leakage into Nevada's water table. The rail and truck shipments would also endanger a greater number of states due to their longer exposure to potential terrorist attacks enroute. If we're going to press for nuke energy some way to dispose of or nuetralize the waste at the site where it's produced will have to be found, the NIMBY argument can no longer hold water.

I think we should export it to Iraq.

Ok then, how about instead of endangering the entire middle of the country with the waste shipments we just truck them the much shorter distance from SC to NORTH CAROLINA? I hear Lumberton could use some improvements, glowing in the dark would save the state from having to install any more street lights...

I agree, especially since my livelyhood depends on jobs like that, but I don't live in Nevada. Why not the equally desert covered states of New Mexico and Utah? Both have been used for nuke testing as well and are relatively scarcely populated. The actual determining factor as I understand it is strata stability, with salt domes being about as stable as you can get. Problem is that nearly all the salt domes are under populated regions and making $20 per ton. So far I'm still leaning toward Lumberton, or perhaps Durham, no big loss in either case.
