YesterdayI went to a outdoor store to stock up on goodies. I was talking to a employee who seemed to know what he was talking about at first. Then his lack of experience, incorrect info, and "Zumbo" comments are aired. How would you handle this?
To be sureI was mad. I was not expecting to hear things like:
That type of gun should be owned by government or police only.
Civilians should(I guess)have full auto because all the criminals do.
The ACLU will never allow our guns to be taken away.
He made blatantly incorrect statements about a product I was interested in while pretending to be knowledgeable.
(no caliber indicated) get 4600 fps.
He indicated hehad experience shooting at 1K. Then told me you couldn't get a gun to group at that range. After all, That is over a mile.
After being ticked at his lack of common sense and pretending to be knowledgable, I walked. I decided to shoot them a email. I am interested in thei response.

He really said all of that??? How old was he? I think I would write down all of his comments and then show it to the owner and ask him exactly what kind of hiring process he conducts. It should be interesting watching him blow a gasket.

I'd leave and shop somewhere else, but I wouldn't expect much to change with or without an angry email to management. Retail doesn't pay enough to retain knowledgeable people, and for every idiot who gets fired or marginalized, another will eventually step up to take his place. I'd recommend buying in bulk online anyway. Cheaper Than Dirt and Sportsman's Guide are good places to stock up on ammo.
CalHunter, it floored me to hear him say it. That much nonsense from one person. Must have to work hard to be that dumb. I am not sure of his age, one of those people who are hard to judge. Ate up like a soup sandwhich, IMHO.
I waited to see if I would get a response from my email before I mentioned the name of the establishment. It was a Cabelas store. I received a phonecall from thestore manager. They wanted a name. Luckily for that guy, I forget. Actually, I was too ticked to care. The manager repeatedly apologized, and said that Cabelas strongly supports our 2A and that was not the way they thought I should have been treated. He also said that he believed he knew who it was, and Cabelas does notcondone such actions.
The product I was interested in was the RXLeupold range finders. This guy was trying to tell me thatIwould have to be able to enter the ballistics of my gun for it to be effective. In reality, the TBR system uses geometry to tell straight line distance at an angle.
Here is the email I sent:
Dear Sirs, I have a complaint of sorts involving a encounter at your retail store.
I was looking at Leupold RX series range finders in the Bargain Cave. I was intrigued as to why such a new, highly touted product was being sold there. A rather upsetting conversation then took place with a sales associate.
At first, the opinions he gave about the product were seemingly on target. Then He began attempting to make statements that were dubious. The conversation then changed to long range shooting using the optics I was interested in. Here are some examples of statements he made.
1. The RX series range finders were not to his liking due to the fact that the ballistics of different rifles is different, and it was difficult to use. ( This is true, but the RX uses geometry, not ballistics, to indicate range at an angle. You then use your rifle's info to select the range.)
2. We were speaking of long range ranging. I was speaking in terms of 1K yards. He stated that that is over a mile. (mile = 1,760 yds.)
3. We spoke of the potential of the new .416 caliber rifle made by Mr. Ronnie Barrett, for long range shooting(currently for military uses). He stated he felt that those rifles should be for military and police only. After more conversation, He made the statement that everyone should have full auto guns because the criminals already have them. Then that guns will never be outlawed because the ACLU won't allow it.( How many crimes do you hear the anti-gun media crying out about that used full auto guns? It is always those nasty look alikes. The ACLU will not defend straight 2A issues.)
I am not looking for this person to lose their job. I would not include the name if I knew it. This level of competence and misinformation is rather shocking from a employee of a business that is in favor of our 2A rights. I would have been satisified with an honest opinion. As much as I disagree, this person is entitled to their opinion. It would have been nice for a honest "I don't know" as opposed to incorrect product info and uneducated, anti gun rhetoric. Thank You for your time, James Fox
nice job. I think you did well letting the management know about the incident. I think i would have had to correct the idget in question, for his own sake, going thru life that ignorantly must be difficult.
