RE: Socialized Medicine
The following is some feedback that I got from a couple canadian buddies from a different site regarding socialized healthcare:
I could be wrong, but we've had it for over 40 years. Started here in my province of Saskatchewan and spread across the country. It's administered by the provinces and varies from province to province. It's getting very expensive, as health care is everywhere, and tax payers pay for it. Does not include drugs, unless in hospital, and dental care or eye care. A lot of people buy plans to cover these expenses. Governments are always trying to stream line it to cut back on expenses. It's nice to know that if need be you can go and see a doctor if you have to and if something happens to your health suddenly you won't have to morgage yourself for the rest of your life to pay for a week in the hospital.
In Ontario it"™s called OHIP. This covers visits to the doctor, immediate medical treatments, assessments such as x-rays/cat-scans, hospitalization with needed surgeries (not cosmetic surgeries) and cancer treatments.
At one time ambulance transportation was covered but now has a flat fee for this service. At one time a trip to the optometrist once every 2-years was covered but that now no longer exists.
Not sure about chiropractor services but in the past a certain number of visits were covered.
Like RAF mentioned the provincial governments are now cutting back/streamlining the system but still a system worth having that prevents financial crippling when immediate medical services are required.
