Default What Zumbo said, could be tied to his age?

My father is the same age as Jim Zumbo. My father worked in the forest industry for 30-years. Zumbo worked in the forest industry also, before becoming an outdoor writter.
My father read Jim Zumbo's comments & agreed with Zumbo 100%. After my Father & I talked he changed his mind, & backed my opinion instead.
My fathertold me " I have no desire to own a semi-auto rifle". I myself do not own a semi auto rifle or shotgun. But Imight want one someday?
I asked him, Don't you think that attitude leaves the door open for the anti-gun groups? That would make bird hunting with a Browning Auto-5shotgun a crime.[]

My point is, Jim Zumbo is an old style hunter. He hunted for years with a bolt action 30-06. After a long elk tracking job, General Chuck Yeager gave him his 300-Weatherby. Under one condition, he had to hunt with it. Jim agreed & hunted with that rifle formany years.
Next cameZumbo's show on the outdoor channel. Remington alwaysshowed Jim huntingwith a Remington model 700 chambered in a Ultra Mag. This wasa marketing tool.

My father does nothunt with & will not hunt with a ultra mag. He says they are over kill on both ends.
IMHO I do not thinkZumbo would have hunted with a Ultra Mag? He was paid to hunt with one, so he did.

Jim & my father are old school & set in there ways. They both believed along the same lines. They are not anti-gun. Just getting older &only focused on there style of hunting.

My point in all of this? We must work on educate the older hunter & the young hunter in the same manner.

You're probably right BUT such thinking divides and conquers us gunowners. I doubt if your father would approve of other gunowners saying his favorite deer rifle should be banned because it's really just a sniper rifle.

CalHunter, You are right. That is the point Imade with him. I also told him the 30-06 was a military round. What would think if they banned you from owning one?
His reaction was what I expected. he said he was just a deer & elk hunter with a mauser action 30-06. He was no a threat to national security. I told him they chamber 308 & 223 caliber rifles in these "black rifles". They make great target or varmit rifles. One could even hunt & bag any game animal in the U.S.A. with a 308-caliber semi-auto rifle.

He still stands firm that he would never buyone.
He doeshowever supporteveryone's right to own them.

DPMS is chambering one in .243. If they retain Nugent's sponsorship, I think I'm going to order one. Hopefully, it'll arrive in time for deer season. If not, I'll be using my M1A this fall.

I agree that education is needed. And Zumbo has brought the issue into the gunowning public's attention like enver before and is slowly having a good effect.

My dad, he's 67, doesn't care for the look of those black guns either, but he's 100% behind us having any kind of gun we want. He says too many people, evenpeople with guns, just don't understand the 2nd amendment.
