Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Lot's of interesting stuff occurring on the reservations. The more potential tribal members you keep out or eliminate from the tribal rolls, the more bingo money there is for the "real" members.

Can't blame em. Its about heratige I would say for the Indians, and about property and money for the slave decendents.

Considering all the blonde haired, blue eyed Indians i have met, some of the blacks are probably more indian than the folks seeking to exclude them.

Maybe, but dont matter if they can't back it up with blood lines. It sounds like its not up to you or I to make that decision.

Considering that our tax dollars help support the reservations and many Indians, I think that we should have a little interest in what's going on in terms of defining Indians and tribal membership. My main issue is that you sometimes have people who are "culturally" Indian, but who are excluded because they lack the genealogical pedigree of others who aren't any more Indian than any typical southerner with a Choctaw great-great-great grandmother.

None of this thread has much to do with it. You need to go downand meet Chief Chador whatever his name is, and make your caseknown. Or our tax dollars. I can't say our tax dollars supports reservations so much.

If you look deeply into such controversies, this is all about what has just occurred with the Cherokees. As for tax dollars, hell yes. In the past and present, tribal status and membership had lots to do with federal funding and benefits. Now the issue of gambling money has muddied the waters even further. It often has much to do with politics and money whether you are trying to get recognized as Indian or you are trying to exclude others. But then again, i doubt that the Bureau of Indian Affairs (very large federally funded budget) or the Cherokee are much interested in input from HNI[&o]

This issue of descendents of former slaves has beencausing vibrationsamong Cherokees here for years.

On another note: In about 1907 someonein OK felt badly about what had been done to native Americans. Legislation was signed allowing tribes in OK toissue their own vehicle license plates. Now 38 tribes issue their own license plates. The money does not go to the OK DMV.OK politicians are having fits of conniptions over this. i love to write letters to local and state politicians about tribal license plates, really gets them stirred up. Some tribes issue their own passports.

The only thing that Democrat and Republican politicians agree on in OK is new and innovative ways to shaft Native Americans. They are really bent out of shape over the Indian casinos and smoke shops.
