If you look deeply into such controversies, this is all about what has just occurred with the Cherokees. As for tax dollars, hell yes. In the past and present, tribal status and membership had lots to do with federal funding and benefits. Now the issue of gambling money has muddied the waters even further. It often has much to do with politics and money whether you are trying to get recognized as Indian or you are trying to exclude others. But then again, i doubt that the Bureau of Indian Affairs (very large federally funded budget) or the Cherokee are much interested in input from HNI[&o]
