Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Sad considering that the VA acutally has a lot of very good services and professionals, that these was a private hospital about 4 miles down the road that would have taken this vet, and the fact that the idiot intake worker/assessor did not take the necessary steps to keep this vet safe.

Funny how this post came up - as I sit here filling out a state job application for a new VA Home in my home town.

Even if he statedthat he refused help, he showed up, which means hehad some desire to feel better. Also, mental health professionals are obligated toprovide people with care if they areassessed to present a real risk to suicide, which can include a MD order for a 72hr hold and detaining a person if they attempt to leave in a dangerous condition. This vet should have beenheld and transfered to a different facilityfor more extensive evaluation. Better to err on the side of caution then to make a mistake like this.

I had to go to the VA hospital yesterday. I had fallen down about a week ago and got infection in a bruise. They VA got me in and treated me very well. I have spend more time by far than I ever wanted to in The VA Medical center. However, much like private insurance, they have been taking a little here and added a little there to the point that I wonder what the future holds for the system. I would be in bad shape without the VA even though we have Blue Cross as well, I end up paying more and more over and above what the VA and insurance pay combined. Something needs to change.

"In January 2005, the House leadership removed Representative Chris Smith as Chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee. Chairman Smith's removal, two years before his six-year term limit, was the direct result of Chairman Smith's strong advocacy on behalf of our nation's veterans and his refusal to allow his colleagues in Congress to forget our governments commitment to sick and disabled veterans. The House leadership also passed over Representative Bilirakis, Vice-Chairman of the Committee and a strong veterans?advocate, for the less senior Congressman from Indiana, Steve Buyer, who has been a strong proponent of reducing the number of veterans who are eligible for VA health care."

The sad fact is that the VA situation is much more dire thanmost imagine. While most VA hospitals i have been to are acceptable, one, in Quincy, MA was truly outstsanding. The one that i sometimes go to in OK City is a sewer with the atmosphere of a mortuary: Veterans wait almost three hours just to ge their blood drawn.

The folks who are really left out in the cold by the VA are those who are wounded in Afghanistan or Iraq. This is especially true of national guard folks. When theyleave active dutythey are often in limbo whentheir body acts up from PTSD, brain concussion, sand fly bites, etc.The sand fly is all over Iraq. It lays eggs under the skin when it bites. The eggs hatch out in the internal organs. It takes over one year just to get a new veterans claim adjudicated.

Rep Chris Smith(R) NJ, was the Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee under the Republicans. He got fired by draft dodgingchickenhawk Hastert for taking care of vets when Bush wanted to cut veterans benefits. Despite being a veteran himself, Steve Buyer(R) IN is a stinking POS.

Here is a link that explains the Commander in Cheap Bush and Fat Hastert shenanigans:

It would be nice if the Billions of dollars we are spending on free health care for illegal immigrants were funneled instead to the treatment of our veterans and our needy citizens.
