Obligated Military Service?

This was kind of spurned from the thread posing the question if we were raising panseys. Does anyone see a benefit in requiring that 18 year old males do some sort of mandatory military service, such as say atwo year term? How about 18 year old females?

All that would amount to is two years of welfare for most high school drop outs and our military would resemble a cross between romper room & the movie Grease!!!!!!!

Let the losers die in the streets by there own hands & let the military train the best that want the training & leave the others to seekhigher education and the development of better arms for those that chose to serve.

Both really good points, but don't you think that many young men and women could learn discipline and greatly value from the military experience, instead of sitting on their u know whats playing play station?

That's the thing, Red--if kids don't learn discipline during their formative childhood years, there really doesn't seem to be much hope. How many people do you know who grew up with no personal responsibilities and became upstanding, productive adults? Some people don't get their crap together until they hit middle age, if at all.

The last thing we need in this country is a bunch of brats eroding the discipline and work ethic of the military, which while good, could be better anyway.

The armed forces will never provide people what they needed from their parents to begin with...

I tend to think of Veitnam when looking at this issue. Lots of young men were forced into the military, did it teach them dicipline? I dont know, I was way too young at the end of that war to know. But I do know the 70s did not produce the most diciplinedbunch of humans. Might not be a good example, just one that came to mind.

It works in Israel, but I wouldn't want it mandatory in the United States. We have the best military in the world for a reason. Volunteers!

The biggest problem would be that this would no longer be a FREE country.

There is a reason we have an all volunteer military.
