Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default RE: Have politicians become untouchable?

In that regard, no I don't think they're untouchable. With someone like Zumbo, his employers can turn him loose immediately. With politicians, the only way to get them out before the end of their term is to expell them from Congress, and it'd take a lot more than a simple vote on a bill to do that.

They can very much be touched at the voting booth, and if the Democrats in Washington start walking lock-step with gun control zealots such as Feingold/Schumer/etc. again, and rubber-stamping anything that Sarah Brady deems important, then they'll feel the pain at the voting booth again.

A big reason for the Democrats' ouster from power in '00 and '02 was that America was tired of the Democrats making the most noise in Washington being completely out-of-touch with middle-of-the-road, normal Americans. But a big part of that was their stance on gun control. I firmly believe that gunowners and hunters were responsible for seeing Gore's presidential bid fail in 2000, and played a huge role in the Republicans gaining control of the House and Senate.

Gunowners and hunters may be a minority, but we're a powerful, vocal minority. We can get things accomplished, and we can do it without a favorable press that the pro-gay-rights movement and similar other movements enjoy. We proved it in 2000, proved it with K-Mart, we proved it with Levi Strauss, we proved it with Zumbo and if we see a renewed effort by the Democrats to impede gun rights like we saw in the mid-to-late '90s, I think it'll be proved again in 2008.

But I don't think the Democrats are stupid. They know better right now. Right now, anything they pass in regards to gun control is likely to be vetoed by Bush, and they don't have the support to override a veto. I think they'll at least wait for a Democrat occupant in the White House in 2009 before they get serious about renewing efforts on the AWB and similar legislation. That isn't to say that this legislation shouldn't be carefully watched and fought, but I do think it's interesting that it was introduced 10 days ago and no co-sponsors have signed on yet.

Most of them only care about re-election. The end. It's sad....

No, politicians are not untouchable. They just like to think they are since they were important enough to be elected in the first place.

Watching things ths past week have been interesting. When Zumbo comes out against semi-auto's there was an immediate grass roots effort, an outpouring of support for the cause, and he was completly torn apart by the end of he week.

When the AWB II is anounced there is an immediate grass roots effort, as well as some representation by Pro-gun groups. Nothing happens, not even so much as a response from the politicians.

Have politics in this country gotten so out of hand that the opinion's of constituant groups mean nothing? Have politicians so well insolated themselve that the common man has no voice or pull?
What is the most important thing foran elected politician? A second or third term.
