Pathetic and ridiculous. There are more important and pressing issues than this that the NCAA should be addressing. As a graduate of the University of Illinois, it is disheartening that the University has capitulated to the NCAA's blackmail.
There are a lot of ethnic and social groups out there that desparately need to grow the hell up, there's nothing patently offensive about that mascot or any other. All of this PC crapola is beginning to make me want to hurl! [:'(]

RE: Any opinions...
I took it as a compliment when the Indians wore the shirts that said, "Fighting whiteys". I would have bought one of the shirts. I thought it was great.

Yep, pretty ridiculous. You know, once these mascots are out of public view, all the native Americans will beremembered for is drunkeness, unemployment, and squalor. Some say it's offensive for a college student to wear a headdress and dance around chanting. I say it's offensive not to have much else to show for your culture.
The Chief was intended as an homage to the bravery, courage, and fighting spirit of the Illini tribe. He was never meant to demean their culture. And, I'd bet there were a whole lot more "progressives" arguing that the Chief should go than any actual Native Americans.
There is an event not far from my place each year in which our local tribe folk do the traditional Pow Wow gathering...people for hundreds of miles all around come to watch and participate...it's totally spiritual, solemand yet amazingly inspirational...the costumes and people are amazing...
