Constitutional Free Republic, Democracy, whatever you wish to label it these days, I think we are getting closer each year (well, we've been there for some time I should say), to becoming a socialist nation.
Take a look at the news every day, local and around the nation. I posted another thread on MI's governor pushing free education. I heard a news report for a bill in Washington (state) that'll give the government the right to annul a marriage if the marriage does not produce children within three years.
I could go on, but it's everywhere. Is it going to stop before it's too late, or is this a realization of the diversity and tolerance that has been pushed at us for so long? We've grown as a nation to tolerate many things, I think that will some day soon include becoming slaves.

Canada is a socialist nation...............this means universal healthcare, public schools, large tracts of public land, etc. I assure you we are not slaves. Nor are the citizens of Australia, Great Britain, New Zealand, Swedenor any other socialistic societies.

We have been slowly heading toward socialism since the days of the Progressives and the New [socialist] Deal. A lot of tiny steps have slowly made the government a leading factor of our economy and our society.[]

You also have higher taxes than us, and far more restrictive gun laws. All of the other countries you've mentioned have even more restrictive gun laws than you do, and much higher taxes than yours, good examples to use...not. You have large tracts of public land because you have a population 1/10th of ours, and much of it is uninhabitable anyway. If universal healthcare is so great why do I keep reading articles about Canadians coming down here for treatment rather than taking advantage of the free care?
But on the bright side y'all do have Tim Horton's on every corner...

I don't believe we are a socialist society. Americans, as a people, are rather generous, and we care about the welfare of those around us, but so far we've only asked (or demanded) that the federal government do so much. The idea of spreading wealth to equalize the classes is alien to most people here, and public sentiment seems to support a fair share for fair work, not much more. Most people shudder at the thought of nationalized business and industry, as well.
Having said that, more and more welfare and minority assistance programs have built up over the years, and this trendcould continue very strongly into the future. Both bloat and wasteful entitlement programs are serious problems within the federal government. Unless the majority reins in politicians who pass pork bills and promise the world to the less-well-off constituency, I don't see things getting much better.
