A few question from a exit level highschool test. See how you can do.
I picked a few questions from a test meeting N.C.L.B..
1. In drag racing, is it possible for the car with the greatest speedcrossing the finish line to lose the race?
2. Can the velocity of an object be negative when its accelertation is positive? Vice versa?
3. Can an object be increasing in speed as its acceleration decreases? If so, give and example. If not, explain.
4. At highway speeds, a particular automobile is capable of accelerating 1.6 m/s squared. At this rate, how long does it take to accelerate from 80 km/hr to 110 km/hr?
5. In coming to a stop, a car leaves skid marks 92m long on the highway. Assuming a deceleration of 7.00 m/ssquared. Estimate the speed of the car before braking.?

I know that number 1 is true, don't really want to take the energy from the brain to try the rest

Wait a minute. Yeah #1 could be true.
Just b/c it has the highest speed doesn't mean it wins.
Ex: Highest speed achieved is say 20 mph, but the car breaks a driveshaft at the starting line. It's racing my Troy Bilt lawnmower. But, my mower makes it to the finish line w/ a top speed of 7 mph. BINGO!
I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nevermind, it has to finish the race. Yep, I did it alright. [&o] Just like I knew I would.

That's the problem there. And IMO it deals w/ schools in general. I graduated 9 years ago and was an A/B honor roll student. Maybe I coulda answered them then. (I type how I talk) Don't know.
But, they don't teach "useable stuff" anymore. Why should I NEED to answer those ?'s right? Why? I work and make a living just fine w/o having those answers. Normal math-not trig, govt economics, some science, etc. Do NOT forget about PCs. Good Lord help someone that can't use of them nowadays.
Hmmm..... this failure couldn't support a family in Texas. Hmmm....

My point exactly. Speaking for Texas, they expect every kid to learn physics and advance physics. If the kids cant learn it (which we all know most special ed kids will never be able to obtain any level close to physics) the teachers are blamed. Instead of addressing areas kids truly need, we are insisting that every kid learn advance math and physics. My bestfriends wife is a M.D., she gets all bent out of shape when we discuse what is going on in education. She will explain, "Im a M.D., I had no physics since highschool, am I considered stupid then".
Thank you Daddy Bush for your care and concern for our children. I truly fear my upcoming physics classes with every kid in the school in it. Do you think ill get much done????? Do you think the kids who can and are willing to learn it will get much out of the classes as Bush wants them????

Goodness, those are questions you can find in 200 level statics and dynamics class in college. Thats difficult
1. is True.
2. I guess it could be depending on your relative position. But thats kinda silly. If v=vo+at, only way is if you initial velocity is greater than your current velocity then Acceleration would be negative also, unless your time is negative.
3. According to a=(Vi-Vo)/t, yes. Your accel could be 20ft/s^2 and then drop to 10ft/s^s but still velocity will go slower.
4. 18.75s
5. I come up with 18.457KM/H, but I think I messed that up somehow or another
Bottom line is I coudln't have done that in high school. I get what your sayin.

Eeeee...that's some scary stuff right there. I dabbled in trig for half a year and then decided to quit while I was ahead. Let's see now...
1. Yes, a car crosses the finish line in a small fraction of a second. It might hold the race speed record at that instant, but that doesn't necessarily mean it maintained that speed for the entire length of the race, or even crossed the finish line first.
2. Duhhh...seems to me that negative velocity and positive acceleration is perfectly feasible when you're thinking in terms of an xy grid. And yes, vice versa works too. The object would be moving forward but slowing down.
3.Yes, take a car for instance. Say it went from 0-60 in 5 seconds, and from 60-70 in another 2 seconds. It increased its speed another 10 mph, but the rate of the increase was much smaller than the first acceleration timeframe.
4. No idea. Tried to write it out; failed.
5.Geez, didn't even read the questioncorrectly at first. Ihave no idea...
RE: A few question from a exit level highschool test. See how you can do.
Goodness, I thought these questionswould be somewhat challenging like calculating the voltage of an electrochemical reaction, or the rate of a second order chemical reaction. Newtonian physics is child's play.
