Default the disease of alcoholism and addiction

Say what ? I'm sorry pretty girl, you liked to blow your mind on alcohol and drugs, you liked to screw around, your choices. Alcohol and drugs are NOT diseases ....... they are addictions you CHOSE of your own free will.

I hate trying to pass off choice as non-choice

NEW YORK (AP) -- Miss USA Tara Conner, who nearly lost her crown for hard-partying in New York nightclubs, says in the upcoming issue of People magazine that her recent stint in rehab was a wake-up call.

"I didn't think I had an issue -- but I was willing to do anything to save my job. ... I've realized that I suffer from the disease of alcoholism and addiction," says Conner, who logged in 31 days at the Caron Foundation rehab center in Wernersville, Pennsylvania.

"I was an equality-opportunity (user) -- I would try anything once," Conner, 21, tells the magazine in its February 12 issue.

At a much-publicized press conference in December, Donald Trump, who owns the Miss USA pageant, said the contrite Conner could hold onto her crown if she changed her ways. She then entered rehab. (Gallery: Pageant scandals)

In her interview in People magazine, her first since leaving treatment, Conner admits that she's dabbled in cocaine.

"Cocaine was one of the drugs that I did use," she says. "It's hard to look back at that."

Alcohol, though, was her biggest vice.

"I'm an alcoholic. It was a craving thing -- once I put it in my body, I would start craving more," says Conner, who notes she drank heavily but wasn't "getting sloppy drunk and dancing on tables."

As for reports that her wild ways also included promiscuity, she says, "I would talk to more than one guy at once -- it doesn't mean that I was sexually active with every one of these people."

The Kentucky native, who has a family history of alcoholism, says her problems "didn't develop overnight." And, she adds, "It wasn't New York City's fault."

Her mother, Brenda Johnson, tells the magazine that Conner once showed up to school drunk when she was 14 -- the same year she won her first beauty pageant and her parents divorced.

Conner, who now lives with a chaperone, says she spends time reading instead of running around town. "I thought I needed to be around people, that I needed that acceptance," she says.

She's itching to return to her Miss USA duties.

"I just can't wait to get back to work -- 'I'm Miss USA, my name is Tara Conner, and I'm happy to meet you,' you know? Life is good."

I used to feel the same way as you stealth until I started going to AA for support of a dear friend. I used to think they should be lined up on the wall and shot. But there were truely some blessed people in there. And some not.

All we can do is be thankful we wasn't born in the same bad situation and thank God instead of patting ourselves on the back so much.

Addiction to drugs and alcohol are problems that SOME people just can't kick without help, and SOME deserve help. But, I hate these lightweight celebrities and politicians who start screaming addiction and disease and try to play the victim the minute they get a good buzz on and screw up.

bigcountry I never said line 'em up ....... I said its not a disease.

Its a choice. Don't drink, and you won't suffer ANY effects (directly or side) from ingesting alcohol. I gaurantee it.

Its choice

But stealth, you have always tried to make this argument, that anything in your head, doesn't count as a problem. All I can suggest is we all thank God, that he has not put us in that situation to be tested by those words.

It is a disease... to people who don't want to accept responsibility for their own actions.

I thought you were an alcoholic, does mean you wanted to shoot yourself?

Addiction is addiction. Food can be an addiction as well as drugs. I just wonder why we allow people to get disability for being obese and a heroin addict gets kicked to the curb? Call it what you want, its the same thing, and addiction. I can understand an addiction growing to the point it brings pain similar to a desease, but its not a disease. What vector causes the addiction disease? Can we get a shot to prevent this addiction disease? You don't catch alcoholism by drinking after some one. You do not get obese after someone coughs on you. I don't mean to down play the grasp addiction has on a person, but to label it as a pathogen is crazy. My dad is and has been for most all his life an addict. He didnt catch it, he developed it by himself.
