Pregnancy Leaves/Paid Sick Days... why are we behind?
We are the super power, super economic hub of all society, right? Why are we lagging so far behind in areas of pregnancy leaves and paid sick days? It's not as if the average paid vacation time is higher. Greed?

Greed?
On whose part? Thecompany, which doesn't want to pay people to stay at home in front of the TV? Or, the employee, who wants to be paid while staying at home in front of the TV? Please explain why people should get themselves, voluntarily, into a situation where they can't, or don't want to, work, and yet the company they aren't working for should have to continue to pay them.

I have a question, I just thought of. My wife has never been pregnant. We adopted our two children. We adopted them as babies. My wife quit work for the first 6 years of their life to stay at home with them. If we would have chosen for my wife to have keep working, could she have taken maternity leave? She was never pregnant, but she stayed home to care for our babies? I've never looked into it. Kind of makes you wonder????[/align]

Probably because there is no such thing as "we are behind". There is no behind. I work in Europe quite a bit, and let me tell you, you can't get jack done because of thier poor work ethic. Spain is the worst. France is behind them. Fortunately, England and Germany they still work hard, but that whole vacation system makes it difficult. I go to Asia too, and fortunatly, they are not "behind" as you say. I like to think of it as ahead.
American way, You work hard, benefit, you act like a sluggard, you get behind.

Maternity Leave is fine. Give her time off to have the baby. Give her her job back after a period of time. But, pay her to stay home? No freaking way. It's ridiculous.
