i hope that the draft isbecomes law as soon as possible with no exemptions for anything.WWII was fought with about 10 million draftees and about 4-5 million volunteers. This is the last major war that the US decisively won. Contrary to popular myth, draftees were good soldiers. Joined the US Army in Jan., 1959 and served until Nov., 1979. Knew a lot of draftees. Served with a few of them. All the ones that i knew were good soldiers.
Then along came Viet Nam and its unfair rendition of the draft with deferments for everything. It tore this country apart. i'm a firm believer that all able bodied males should serve in the US military.
We won WWII because we had allies, and most importantly it was national war effort with a good cause that everyone believed in. We lost Vietnam because we had no strong allies, there was little public support because it was a poorly thought out conflict with ill-fated cause. Do I respect those who served in Vietnam, oh God yes, with just as much faith as those who served in WWII and are in Iraq. Do I support the cause for which they are sent to die, no. The United States millitary is supposed to be made of a fully vollunteer effort. Are there cases where the draft is needed, of course. Is it needed now, no. Have I served in the armed forces, thought about it, but I have minor heart complications, there for the Army won't touch me. Do I feel safe with a draft, no, even though I won't be called up, I fear for those who would be sent to fight for a cause in which they don't believe.

RE: The Draft,, get ready
That reminds me of the Clinton joke.
"Did you hear? While Clinton was out jogging, someone threw a beer at him. It was ok, it was a Draft, he dodged it."
Personally I have problems with either Bush or Clinton sending soldiers to die at a job neither were willing to do. One ran like a little kid to Canada, the other used Political powers to get out of it. Both stink.

Get use to it, more and more politicians are "career" politicians and they will not have served at all; not even to the level of Clinton or Bush. At least in those two cases one was drafted, one went reserves (with issues).
As it is, there are few of the candidates coming out now that have any military background, even if that background is dodging military.
