Default banning the n-word

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,247175,00.html

After facing intense opposition against a proposed ordinance that would have outlawed the use of the word in Brazoria, Texas, Mayor Ken Corley confirmed Friday to FOXNews.com that he is dropping the proposal altogether.

"I decided to drop the proposal because of the overwhelming opposition from the people that attended our public hearing last night," Corley said.
According to Corley, the issue went from having about 90 percent of people initially supporting it, to about 70 percent of people now opposing it.

"There was a lot of discussion about First Amendment rights and there was a lot of talk from the black community that they were very uncomfortable with the idea," Corley added.

If passed, a violation of the ordinance would have been a class C misdemeanor, which is punishable by a fine up to $500. Users of the N-word would be fined only if a complaint were filed against them.

"I had no plans to attack anybody who was using it as a term of endearment, only when it was used in an inflammatory way or to try and hurt or degrade someone," said Corley.

Corley's decision brought applause from most of the 200 people who gathered to discuss the issue Thursday night, reported the Houston Chronicle.

Though almost all speakers Thursday said they opposed the use of any racial epithets, most said the small town of 2,800 has few racial problems, and Corley's ordinance would cause more problems than it would cure.
"I'm embarrassed for my little town," said Bill Lott, who is white, reported the Chronicle. "We need to unite, not divide."

The Rev. Melvin Johnson, who is black, told the Chronicle he thought it was wrong to single out one word.

But others liked the idea.

"So many people are here tonight as proof that (this) is a problem," said Rev. Ricky Jones, who is black.

Corley has said that although he doesn't think Brazoria has any more of a problem with the use the word than anywhere else, he wanted his town to take a progressive stance against its use.

"My original goal was to ban all racials slurs," Corley told FOXNews.com earlier this week. "We wanted to start with the n-word because it's the most controversial, and then the challenge of the other words wouldn't have been as hard."

While Corley says he won't pursue the issue any longer as mayor, he will continue his push as a private citizen.

"I'm going to continue to spread the message that all men and women are created equal," Corley said. "This has already been an overwhelming success because people all over the United States are talking about this issue now, and they're all talking together."

Lets see, that would mean blacks could still call each other that but whites would be fined $500 for it.Seems reasonable.[>:]

Funny the black people were uncomfortable with the idea, nothing stops racial hatred quite like large fines and a criminal record, surely that would bring aracist to his senses and not just piss him off even worse

That got me too - what it boiled down to was that anyone OTHER than blacks using the N Word would be fined upon a complaint being filed, but a black guy calling another black guy N word with some endearment ? behind it would be okay ?

Stupid people in this world ........ everyday I'm more and more amazed

Actually, human intelligence seems to haveincreased steadily over the lastfew generations. Psychologists call it the Flynn Effect. I tend to think that better medicine and nutritionare the cause, but better education could have something to do with it as well. Except our system has gotten downright ineffective in many parts of the U.S.

Whatever the case, it doesn't appear that many people are interested in reaching their full potential...

This law would've died in the Sumpreme Court, if it had made it that far. And the double standard is pretty absurd. I could see some moron politician using it to support a law that would ban any and all language used in anger, or in an angry tone of voice. They really like to try andsave people's feeling from getting hurt through term after term "serving the public interest".

yeah right

the world is full of HIV positive "smart" people who couldn't keep it in their pants or keep their pants on.

the world is chocked full of fat people becuase they can't quit eating

the world is full of lazy people who don't get any excercise

the world is full of people who don't raise their kids right

the world is full of drug addicts

the world is full of people who smoke

Smart is not an adjective for the people mentioned above, progressive intelligence would see an earth where people knew better than to smoke, blow their minds on drugs, have risky sex and self-ruin their healths.

No, dumb people are breeding with dumb people resulting in kids raised by dumb parents - inevitably dumb children will be the end result.

Not everyone utilizes their intelligence to the fullest, and they often have children. It's a vicious cycle.

If you don't use your intellect, it can be nearly impossible to resist the animalistic urges forpleasure and comfort that come from time to time. If something feels good, it can be very difficult to convince yourself that it could be harmful in the end,

One problem is the most intelligent people, are the least likely to have children. Thats a simple fact. And if they do have children, its most likely going to be 2 at most. Hard to compete with the most unintelligent of folks who push out 4-6 kids.

i dont think the gov should ever ban any words whatsoever. no matter how awful they are the minute words start being illegal is when our rights start to get taken from us.
