I found this on a Wisconsin Newspaper blog. The writer asks and interesting question.
Quote:
The government took $3,300 for income tax, another $3,300 for SS, $800 for medi-care, $2,900 for state income tax, and $3,800 in property taxes, $200 in gas taxes, and $569 in sales tax. That's $14,869 in taxes and I haven't even considered all the additional "fees" or taxes on lights, phone, and heating I have to pay as well. Now the Median income for WI is $45,000, so that means the government already takes 1/3 of what we earn, and you think that is NOT ENOUGH, that somehow the government is ENTITLED TO MORE?
The question: How much do you think the government is ENTITLED to (50%, 60%, ???) how much?

Taxes are always an arguementative subject. We hate paying our taxes, but yet we hate to drive an bad roads, that's just one senario, I know there is probably more, but you get my point. My mother use to work for the IRS as an auditor.Carried a badge and gun, the whole nine yards. She always believed that the rich get out of paying taxes due to leagal loop holes, and had the money for lawyers to find them, she thought the only real way to be fair in taxes was a straight % tax. Lets say 10% for agrumentative purposes. You make X amount of dollars for the year, you pay 10% on that X, and so does everyone else, everyone pays the 10% on what they earned for the year. No arguements, no loop holes, straight 10%. That way those who make the most pay the same rate as those who only make piddins. There are probably arguements to this also, so I'm sure someone here will express them. I wouldn't mind the straight % myself, I think it would be a good idea. For those of you who don't, what's your idea?

I believe in pay as you go,, the true conservative value.
I believe in pay as you go too. But, right now it's a too much spending issue. NOT a too little tax issue. THAT is the true conservative value.
Also, it is patently false that "it's only too much when there is a budget surplus." You CANNOT tax the country into a surplus without restraining spending. You CAN tax yourself into socialism using your axiom. You can tax to the point that it cripples the economy or at least slows it down to the point that you actually reduce revenues.
