A bill that would make spanking your child a misdemeanor is now headed for the Kookifornia Legislature. While I would agree that spanking a child should be a last resort, sometimes it's the only thing that will arrest bad behavior, especially with a particularly willful child who just won't respond to normal corrective measures such as time out in the corner or loss of privileges. My parents, like theirs before them, felt the same way and would tan my britches when necessary. They never applied corporal punishment excessively, even from my own point of view, and certainly not nearly as often as I actually deserved it. I've never held it against them, and in fact appreciate the fact that I grew up with a clear idea of where the boundaries lay, it saved me from making some potentially disastrous choices more than once. I don't feel that the state has any business telling me how to discipline children, their "one size fits all" approach doesn't fit all and rarely works anyway. If corporal punishment is taken to the point of obvious abuse then there should be a standard for that, but to arbitrarily tell me that I can't discipline my child or grandchild as I see fit borders on the dawning of the police state that should concern us all.

I wish they would allow spanking in school again. I hate how teachers have no control over students any more. All we are doing is raising a generation of spoiled kids that dont do that they must pay the price for the bad things they do.

A child doesnt have to be beat to death for a spanking to be effective. I got spanked and I dont hold it against my parents in any way. They didnt scar me for life.

It's these kind of people who think you can also just set down and talk nice to the terrorist and they will stop hurting us when they see how nice we are. Sometimes a butt wippin is all that will work.

Wonder how come adolescent (sp) crime has risen so much? They have no fear/respect for authority. None. They are being taught that whatever they wanna do is fine, and no one should dare question it. It's insane! I believe the phrase "free country" hasgone way too far.

I just heard a lady say on TV that spanking isn't a long term effective tool. [:'(] Sure got my attention. AND KEPT IT TOO! [&o] And you bet everything you got my son WILL get his when he gets out of line.
