SAN ANTONIO -- A 10-year-old San Antonio girl has died after being attacked by her neighbor's dog. Amber Jones was attacked while trying to help the animal after it had gotten its collar caught on a chain link fence.
She died Friday at the hospital after the pit bull had bitten her in the stomach and neck.
Animal Cruelty Investigator Eddie Wright says that the dog was put into the custody of Animal Services and will likely be euthanized because it killed someone. There will be a hearing during which the owners of the dog will have a chance to defend the animal. He says that hearing has to be held within 10 days of the incident.
A police spokesman says criminal charges against the owners appear unlikely. He says the report indicates it was "just an unfortunate accident."
Had it been a beagle ....... she almost certainly wouldn't have been killed. A chihuahua, toy poodle, bassethound ........ countless breeds of dogs wouldn't have killed her. The one type fo dog thats KNOWN to kill, maul, and viciously attack ?
Pit Bull dogs. Why ? Instincts to do so.
This particular instance the owners ofthe dog should be sent to prison IMO. They were negligent with a deadly animal, and it costa girl her life. This is EXACLTY why legislation is needed for pit bull dogs - to hold accountability for people who own them. Their fence wasn't escape proof - they should be held accountable for the death of the girl [:@]
When I was 10, my parents made two things very clear: don't talk to strangers, and stay away from other people's dogs unless the owner(s) are with you and say its OK.
It's generally a bad idea run up to a trapped dog and started tugging at its neck to free it. Most dogs don't like that kind of stuff.
Anyway, no, the dog owners didn't do a very good job containing the animal.
In any situation where any pet harms a human the pet's owner should be held legally and financially responsible. You adopted that animal, you should be responsible for what it does.

LOL ........ the stuff I read on here is hillarious ! And thing is, people would BELIEVE the above unless they knew better.
I trapped, a LOT, as a kid. Dogs were always eager to see you coming when they'd been in a trap all night. I did have one dog bite at the gloves on my hands, but he wasn't doing it in a mean way, and was my BESTEST friend when he got out.
Cats on the other hand ........ wicked mean when they're in a trap, aint got a sense in the world. Dogs ? They know you're going to help them.

So if someone breaks into your home and your dog attacks, you should be responsible?

A ten year old should know better not to approach strange dogs. Where were the parents?
Lol, so its the kids fault the dog killed her?
I love how you guys are quick invoke the same preponderance of responsibility on a ten-year old as you do on adults. Six, you're just wrong about everything.[8D]

Her actions led her to the situation that developed into an attack. But that's irrelevant...she's dead. Dog owners and parents need to take this crap more seriously. It'll continue to happen, and there's no realistic way to stop it. It's up to the adults to keep their kids safe.

Sometimes I assume that most people had good parents who teach their children a little bit about everything, including safety.
