Kudos to a woman who came from poverty and remembers what it was like. She has a long history of philanthropy, which was reinforced by her generous offer to the poor girls in Africa.
And then she intends to support the institution to the point where a legacy of education is fostered, giving those kids the tools they need to go back and make a difference in their communities if they so choose...on a smaller scale but not unlike what America did by way of the post-WWII GI Bill, which helped fuel one of the greatest expansions in American history.
She is helping make a difference and putting her money where her mouth is.
As usual, you're behind the curve on this one, Buster.
She chose females, because they are at risk in that country. They are often beaten and raped in and on the way to the schools to a point where many fear to attend and more don't graduate. Its a bit more detailed than that, but that's pretty much it in a nutshell.
Besides, its only a start and a good one at that. Perhaps if this succeeds, she'll do more and be more inclusive.
Some people complain when people do nothing and others even complain when people do anything...
if I wanted to help only impoverished white kids, I'd be called a racist and hung for it.
if I wanted to help only boys, I'd be called a sexist
if I wanted to help only heterosexual kids, I'd be called a homophobic
if I wanted to do ANYTHING that didn't equally involve (or more) minority and other sex, I'd be branded something. I'm simply calling the same shots towards Oprah that she and most other celebs would call.
She's a sexist piggy that doesn't care about little African Boys
