Default help would be appreciated (sleep walking phenomena )

Tonight my wife and I put my son (5 years old) to bed in his room, something that has never been a problem before. He was sound asleep after maybe 10 minutes, he went to a pool today, was a very tired boy after our church group met tonight.

Anyway, maybe 30 minutes later and my wife comes out of our office and he was stanidng next to our fireplace (had fire in it) and she said " what are you doing up ? " and he didn't really answer, just stared at here. I kinda ignored the whole thing, letting her deal with it.

He walked across the living room, climbed a chair and as he got to the top he said " I'm a nice boy" and then turned his back to her, and fell off the back of the chair kathunk. Wife went around the kitchen bar to him, and looked over the chair, he wasn't making a sound, and he was just sitting up, staring blankly ?

She got him out, took him to the fireplace and starting to quizz him. Mind you, eyes are wide open, not hardly blinking, and he said " the man keeps going down, DOWN , DOWN ! " getting louder and she was asking what man ? Again he went silent, and then said " my feet don't like it " and thats when I walked into the situation.

I picked him up baby like, and his pupils were very dilated, eyes wide open, staring. I turned the living room light on, and told him to blink, he kinda did, and then told him to pinch me, and he kinda did, I told him HARD, and he did. I sat him down and he kinda started coming around more like a sleepy child would. I asked him to go to his bedroom and he said " I have a bed ? " in the form of a question. I said yes, you do, go there, and my daughter had gotten up by then. I asked him who she was and he said " Abby " and then he tried to go to her room ? I told him no, his other bedroom, and he went in and fell right back into an eyes closed sleep.

The only thing thats changed recently is we went to MN for Christmas and for 4 nights my wife and I took turns sleeping in the same room as him and when we got home, he has this fear now of going to bed alone, he's NEVER had that before. We never left him alone with anyone, always her and me so I don't know why the sudden doesn't want to sleep alone deal.

Anyway, here's the worst thing - I think he was sleep walking. He had presence of mind to stand by the fire, to walk towards my wife, to talk etc. Whats to stop him from opening a door and in 20 degree weather take off through the woods ?

I'm going to read up tommorrow on sleepwalking bigtime, this has me seriously concerned.

Oh, and last night, he broke out in hives, not a bad case, but even though he had sensitive skin as a baby, nothing too terribly unusual for a child, right ?

Very, VERY weird, odd, strange ........ concerning. I'm sleeping in the living room tonight, blocking all exit doors with chairs. Overkill I know, but you cannot be too safe with your kids IMO.

I don't like airing my worries on the 'net ....... but if anyone has experience here, I'd be much appreciated for some input !

Buster, I hope everything turned out okay for your son.

What did you find out? From what I read, it's probably something he'll grow out of, but I'm hoping it's nothing more serious than that.

My dad and uncles used to have to chase another uncle cause he'd sleepwalk and go outside sometime. I don't really know much about it, but he doesn't do it any more and he was never injured (though he always could have been I guess).

If the behavior isn't chronic then it's probably just a temporary condition , probably due to exhaustion . I used to do that from time to time when I was younger , it was nearly always preceded by a long tiring day .

I used to do it when I was a kid. Never got hurt though. Mom says my eyes would be wide open and I would talk, but usually jibberish.

Nothing to worry about Buster, I used to do that when I was younger, and my dad did to. Grandma talked about the time he peed in the kitchen garbage can while sleep walking - still a big laugh on dad to this day.
I had a similar experience.... My parents woke up to me peeing in my Dad's sock drawer! lol..... Another time they awoke just in time to catch me about to urinate on them... Wierd stuff, but not unusual for kids.
