Women who first give birth at ages 16 and younger are more likely to bear a second child within the next two years (26 percent) than are women who have their first child at ages 17-18 (20 percent) or at ages 19-22 (22 percent). However, there are important racial and ethnic differences in the likelihood of rapid repeated childbearing: Among whites, age at first birth has little effect on the proportions who have a second birth quickly; but among blacks, it has a significant inverse effect, with younger women more likely than older women to have a second child quickly.
At nearly all ages at first birth, Hispanic mothers are more likely than either whites or blacks to have a second birth soon after the first. While the youngest black mothers (those 16 and under) are more likely than the youngest whites to have a rapid second birth, the oldest white mothers (those 19-22) are more likely than the oldest blacks.
Socioeconomic background (represented by level of parental education), marital status at first birth and wantedness of the first birth also affect the pace of repeated childbearing. Compared with young mothers whose own mothers are high school graduates, those whose mothers are dropouts are more likely to have a second child within two years.
Teenage mothers who are married at their first birth appear somewhat more likely than their unmarried counterparts to bear another child quickly; and mothers who wanted their first child at the time of conception are generally more likely to do so than are mothers whose first births were unwanted.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
RE: Is this our 2nd biggest problem after drug abuse?
V.C. are you sure these two problems don't go together?
Or is it a cultural thing? Tolerated behavior?
My wifes mother had some minor surgery done Wednesday so I spent th day at or local hospital. What an eye opener!!!!
They look like something you would see on TV. 14-17 he!! I don't know how you would tell. Fat ,tattooed & not a care in the world. These women should not have been allowed to own a puppy not alone a child. It is really sad. This is our future work force. We need a new direction on how to deal with these unwed mothers.
I don't know what it will take but what we are doing now is not working!!!!!

Amen. And the numbers are just scary. The fallout is in our faces daily.
The cost is a huge part of our tax bills, insurance costs, medical costs, legal fees, legislation, lower capacities, and on and on.
It is a millstone we carry as we continue to compete globally.
RE: Is this our 2nd biggest problem after drug abuse?
number one would be poor parenting. which of course is caused by drug use which causes teen pregnancy which causes poor parenting which causes drug use which causes.........
RE: Is this our 2nd biggest problem after drug abuse?
Children .......... they are a direct blessing for God.
The "fallout" you speak of is because of the removal of God from our society. Want proof ? Look at the Mormons, the Amish, the Menonites, etc . They have many children and they're good children with core values.
Compare them with a mother of 8 children from 3 different Daddy's, unmarried from East St Louis drawing welfare.
There's your difference VC. It has NOTHING to do with the number of children you have. I think your'e trying to finger what social nightmares we as a country face - look to the removal of God and there is your answer.

bawanajim, there are probably lots of them that don't even have dad's in their lives, combine that with the lack of faith in the all mighty, they have no physical (dad) or mental (spiritual) means of guidence to keep them from going down the wrong path.
