Default The Economics of Hunting

Firearm deer season just opened here in Ohio. I heard a news report that estimated that it will generate 266 million dollars in revenue this year. Those are the types of facts that you need to deal with some of the anti-hunting crowd and fence sitters.

I'm just north of Dayton. I went to the new Gander Mountain to buy some traps over lunch and there was a fellow in the parking lot showing off a six pointer. So, i guess that things are starting off well here.

Iff,

I THINK that the DNR in all states do some sort of economic impact of hunting assessment every year. Too bad that such info is not made much much more widely available. I wouldn't have know about it if i hadn't heard it on the radio.

Hunting and fishing generate plenty in terms of spending.

According to Michigan's DNR:

Michigan ranks 3rd in the nation in licensed hunters (more than 750,000) who contribute $1.3 billion annually to our economy. Some 2.6 million non-consumptive users contribute $1.2 billion to our economy.

Michigan ranks 8th in the nation in numbers of licensed resident and nonresident anglers who contribute $2 billion annually to our economy.

Michigan ranks 1st in the nation in the number of registered boats and snowmobiles; recreational boating contributes $2 billion annually to our economy and when there is an abundance of snow, snowmobilers create a $1 billion bonanza for northern Michigan communities.

With 22 million visitors annually, state parks and recreation areas play an important role in MIchigan's tourism industry. In 1997, visitors to state parks and recreation areas spent an estimated $484 million, about half of that within 20 miles of their destinations.

Michigan's nearly one million registered boaters spent about $700 million on trips in 1998.

Michigan DNR manages the largest dedicated state forest system in the nation; forest products industry and recreational users contribute $12 billion and 200,000 associated jobs annually to our economy.

Financial information is irrelevant to people who hate hunting. They can't understand carrying capacity. They don't have a prayer when it comes to understanding the economics.

We can all agree on this. Ifferd, no doe tags or days bites!!! I've only been able to have 1 afternoon in the field & saw a white tail that looked like a parachute... as the deer was swallowed up by the THICKet. With all the dudes in their new trucks pulling trailers loaded with atvs, we're putting alot more into the economy than just the "hunting stuff" we buy.

They also believe you cannot place a dollar value on an animal's life.

They should come to Texas and watch us. We do it all the time.
