Bought a vehicle yesterday in Michigan. Wasn't planning to do that, but it just sort of worked out that way.
Anyway, when I went to do the title work, I couldn't because I had my driver's license renewed recently and they automatically removed my social security number.
To transfer the title you must have your driver's license and if it's doesn't show the social security number, you must have your social security card with you or some other document that show your social security number, such as a health insurance card, which includes your number.
Unfortunately many insurance companies are aware of identify theft and are changing the contract numbers to remove the social sec number from the policy number. The social security number was previoiusly often included in the policy number for some carriers. My health insurance card no longer includes my social sec number, so that didin't work either.
So....had to postpone the transfer of the title and couldn't get 30 day tags.
I called my bank and was able to transfer thousands of dollars by a siimple phone call, but could not get the paperwork done.
No big deal, but I've not carried my social security card before...ever. Now it seems it might be a good idea to carry it...increasing the risk of identify theft?
Are we going forward or backward?
