BOSTON, Nov. 22, 2006 "”Joe Mroszczyk, president of the College Republicans at Boston University, admits he set out to stir up a hornet's nest when he came up with the idea of offering a whites-only scholarship at the school. But he got a little more buzz than he bargained for.
"To tell you the truth, we didn't see this coming," Mroszczyk said. "The Drudge Report picked it up yesterday, and today I just finished a round of national interviews. It's kind of overwhelming."
All the media attention is focused on a $250 Caucasian Achievement and Recognition Scholarship offered by Mroszczyk and the BU chapter of the College Republicans. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher; they must write two essays; and, here's the kicker, they must be at least one-quarter Caucasian.
The application itself offers an explanation: "We believe that racial preferences in all their forms are perhaps the worst form of bigotry confronting America today."
According to Mroszczyk, his group is offering the scholarship to point out "how ridiculous it is to have any sort of racially based scholarship."
At BU, for example, students who are at least one-quarter Hispanic can apply for a National Hispanic Recognition Scholarship.
"There are plenty of poor, white, academically gifted students who need that money just as much," Mroszczyk said.
It isn't the first time a group of students has tried this kind of stunt.
Two years ago a chapter of the College Republicans at Roger Williams University also offered a $250 whites-only scholarship. That's where the BU students got the idea.
"We are not doing this as some kind of white supremacy thing. I wanted to have a dialogue about racial preference," Mroszczyk said.
It seems as if Mroszczyk has gotten his wish. People from across the country are now weighing in on the idea through e-mail and the radio. And closer to home, some BU students are having their say too.
"It's a poor way to talk about affirmative action," said David Coreas, the 21-year-old senior who is president of the Latino fraternity Phi Iota Alpha at BU. "If they want to have a scholarship, then let them have a scholarship, but they're stirring up controversy in the wrong way."

I personally feel they should start applying for the minority scholarships that spell out 1/4 what ever race or nationality the scholarship is for and sueing them when it is not granted to the whitest looking white boy one can find that happens to be able to prove that they are 1/4 black/hispanic/oriental. I know folks that are as white looking as me who are partially black, hispanic, or oriental.
I would be very interested what their reactions would be to being called racist because someone looked 100% white boy and was able to prove they were half of another ethnicity.

If theres people raising hell about this they need to step back and take a look at the reality in this country.Screaming racism about this and ignoring the fact theres scholarships available for other minorities only would be hieght of hypocrasy IMO.

A $250 "scholarship" is a joke, and not going to make a difference for someone that really can't afford college, but evidently it's got some attention.
I don't agree with giving anyone federal money because of their race. If a private donar wants to give a certain amount of money only to males under 5' tall that are balding and have an ingrown toenail, it's their business what they do with their own money, but otherwise it's ridiculous.
I was reminded of a UNCF comercial the other day--it's actually still running. "A mind is a terrible thing to waste". Why can't they at least be honest about it? They don't think any mind is a terrible thing to waste--it's only a waste if it's the mind of someone who is black. A hugely racist organization, just like the Black Panthers, the Rainbow Coalition, and umpteen others out there.
I think it was the Boston Symphony Orchestrawho got in hot water a few years ago over "discriminatory practices"--they hadn't hired enough black musicians. Funny thing though, they hired by blind audition. The musician played behind a curtain--the ones doing the hiring had no idea if the musician was male or female, black or white or whatever--they were hired based solely on their talent--or at least were. The story went on to tell they were required to hire other musicians based on their skin color.
I don't care what color you are--if you qualify, you should get the job, or scholarship, or whatever--not because of your race.
My wife took some college classes a year or two ago--we couldn't afford for her to quit her job and go full-time--just buying a few used books hurt the budget. She gets to class and sees kids with brand new books that might stay in class a week before they dropped, and didn't make it any secret that they didn't have to pay for those books. Crap like that burns my butt worse than a little blue flame. BTW, she was on the National Honor Role while she went, but hasn't been able to finish yet, and won't be getting any grants or free books if she decides to go back. She got pretty discouraged and disgusted seeing all that money go to waste while she had to make do with used books that still cost a fortune.

We had a guy at Texas Tech do this a couple years ago. It was designed for only straight white men. The NAACP, the United ***** College Fund, theGLBSA, and a bunch of othersraised all sorts of hell.
