Iraq just about has me convinced that all this country has been capable of doing for the last 50 years is fighting half-assed politicized police actions. I don't see anything changing in the near future. Even if there was an attempt to focus entirely on Afghanistan, the politicians would find a way to turn it into a 4-star circle jerk. I feel sorry for the troops who are giving their all for a country that, in many respects, doesn't deserve it[:'(]

Iraq is the politicians. If there weren't partisan politics we wouldn't have even been there. It is the single defining issue for them to fight about in 08. the outcome of that election is the prize not freedom for Iraq.

If it was a military conflict instead of a political one, all the strongholds ofinsurgents would have been smoking rubblea year or two ago. And the flow of armed personnel and supplies coming from Iran and Syria would be a trickle. And you wouldn't see 20 year old Marinesbeing courtmartialed for failing to follow rules of engagement in the heat of battle that aredamn near as stringent as what an American beat cop has to follow in arresting a shoplifter. And you wouldn't have American guards at Gitmo and elsewhere being labelled as the equivalent of Gulag guards by folks who want to play partisan politics. I could go on for another page or two, but I gotta deal with work then lunch with a cute brunette.
