Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default End Of Second Amendment

Well, folks, with Pelosi taking the House, and other things not going so well, expect to see your guns taken away within 2 years.

That's a bit of an overstatement, don't you think?

I fear what COULD happen if we go back to where we were in the early '90s, when the Democrats were attempting to infringe on 2nd Amendment rights at all costs. But we'll see. I don't think anything major will happen in the next two years. The Democrats know that anything they send to the president in terms of liberal measures will be vetoed. And if they allow those ultra-liberals to exert their anti-gun wishes like they did in the early '90s, the sportsman vote that has become increasingly polarized in recent elections will become rabid all over again and the Republicans will be right back in control in 2008. There were several moderate Democrats elected today to join moderate Democrats already in Congress. I think they'll bide their time until 2008, when they have an opportunity to add the White House to their power bank. Then we may be in trouble.

I would rather see Republicans in power than Democrats because the Democrats' social values are completely opposite my own. However, the Democrats are in power and that's all there is to it. Instead of cringing, I look forward to perhaps a Democrat House and a Republican president (and hopefully a Republican Senate) working together to bring about some good for America.

I don't see anything major happening in the arena of Gun Control, Ben you bring up excellent points, Gun control just doesn't work, end of story. I know my statements made earlier were a little inflamed but only becuase of my election night anger, and after doing some research on the internet, I have come to the conclusion that gun control in our country will have a snowball's chance in Hell.

I am sure that the Dems will now start chipping away again but they won't get anything done for at least the next two years.

I think JamesB is right. The MO of the Democrats is to incrementally constrain and file away at the perimeter of the second amendment. Who needs .50 cal Browning Machine Gun rifles? Who needs a rifle with a pistol grip stock and a magazine containing 30 rounds of ammunition (read "assault rifle")? Who needs more than 20 firearms? Who needs more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition in their home? Why should we protect the bad firearms manufacturers from frivolous unfounded law suits? Why not register firearms, if you object to a registry of weapons you must have something to hide (I've heard this argument from a gun owner/hunter, believe it or not).

I would like to think the Democrats have been burned too often by anti-gun legislation to try it again . . . but Americans have such a short view of history that I'm guessing we can expect to see anti-gun legislation come at us again and again and again throughout our lives, until something in the culture changes. I think liberals take it as axiomatic that guns are bad, that only uneducated bubbas want to have guns, and we need to be enlightened and bring the bubbas into the modern world by taking their guns. So long as this liberal construction of guns as bad and gun owners as benighted bubbas persists, Democratic office holders will continue to try to score points with their base by sponsoring and voting for anti-gun legislation. At least that is my theory.
