You know who you are--all the folks that went nuts because Rush Limbaugh (a radio talk-show host) gave a disparraging opinion about a celebrety suffering from Parkinson's disease (Michael J. Fox) when he lied in a television ad--where are you?
I'm usually one of the last to see any "breaking" news, but I just heard the comments presently "serving"Maine congressman andformer (and possibly future) Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry made about our soldiers in Iraq (and later vehemetly denied once it was brought to the attention of the public, and declared he would not apologize). His comments were to students, and went something like "You get educated, you get smart, and you go on to have a successful life. You don't get smart, you wind up in Iraq." **DISCLAIMER** That is not a word-for-word quote, but you get the idea.
Doesa celebrety that lied in a television ad deserve defending, and our troops don't? Where is the outrage?

I was thinking there was no way I was the first on this board to hear about it. This just floors me--pages of criticism because Rush statedan opinionabout MJF, which IMO wasn't exactly in good taste but wasfoundeddue tofact, upmteen posts defending MJF even though he lied, but Kerry can basically say our soldiers are too stupid to get a good job and all you hear are crickets chirping? Reckon he thinks it's too bad they all aren't smart enough to wound themselves, then write themselves a recommendation for a Purple Heart and get out?

Just went to Drudge and read it and watched the video.
Then he said: "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."
The guys an idiot, proably won't get many posts because most will agree he shouldn't have said it.

Thanks Charlie--I figured you would respond, and don't look for many if any others.
Still, it just floors me that there isn't any outrage shown, even if folks agree. We can have pages of debate about a radio talk show host, but something like that gets said about our soldiers and nothing?????
You know as well as I do that there's at least a few hard-core Democrats on there also, just like there are hard-core Republicans.
So far, this board reflects the real world. A Republican screws up or is just flat wrong, fellow Republicans roast him/her. One of the biggest players in the Democratic party makes a flat-out idiotic statement, denies he meant what he said, and refuses to apologize, and????????????????? Again, where is the outrage? Have any Democratic politicians made any statements in regard to Kerry's comments?

heard about it on the radio on the way home today. i might be outraged, but the statement is ambiguous.
if he was referring to our troops, it was a vile comment worthy of censure.
if he was referring to POTUS, then the statementis just politics as usual (and he's a dumb ass for not making it clearer that he was referring to POTUS).
While Kerry's purported remarks were politically very incorrectthey do raise a question that probably needs more study. Are America's best educated citizens volunteering for military service and if not, why not? How many of Harvard's class of 2006 enlisted in the Army after graduation? What percentage of enlisted personnel in the Armed Forces are college graduates? My guess is that it is not large in either case, at a time when warfare is more technologically complex than it has ever been. While the educational level of today's Army soldierisactually higher than age-matched citizens who are not in the military, it could be higher if more ofthe college educated citizenry could be recruited into the service. America's system of higher education is the best in the world but it's products, a tremendus asset, are not being utilized to their full potential by the Armed Forces. I don't know whether it is a cultural problem where highly educated people do not see military service as a worthwhile endeavor or an economic phenomenon where college graduates simplyhave many lucrative career options available to them and the military is not seen as a particularly attractive one. I hope the issue of why more college graduates are not only not volunteering for the military but are avoiding government service all together will be more carefully studied as a result of this incident.
You won't see the outrage, or the posts for that matter, because most of those who criticize Rush are the same people who support, and who get their news from, the left wing biased media. They will either try to put some sort of spin on it or they simply won't hear about the remarks because their chosen news source won't report on them.
Even if you believe that Rush was truly "making fun" of MJF you need to ask yourself a question. Which is worse? One man making light of a celebrity suffering from a terminal illness, or a U.S. Senator making a sweeping statement about our nations military, implying that they are all "uneducated". It is pretty much a "no brainer", but you can bet you won't hear half of the hoopla that was stirred up over the Rush episode.
Once again, a Democrat can say anything he/she wants, regardless of how inflammatory and nothing will come of it. It is honestly sickening.
