Default 655,000 Iraq War Deaths

Last week the esteemed medical journal The Lancet released an epidemiological study concluding that 655,000 Iraqis died from war-related injury and disease from March 2003 to July 2006. This shockingly high figure has drawn attacks from the Bush administration and right-wing pundits.

Well, chr103yod, I'd think you might care that we caused over a half million deaths by starting an illegal war for reasons that were later proved false...but maybe that's just taking responsibility, which we know this Republican adminstration doesn't do.

But the 655,000 number seems very high to me. The Iraqi government and Bush's figure of only 40,000 dead isn't believable, either. If we've lost almost 3,000 people and there are "only" 40,000 Iraqi dead, most of them civilians, then we really aren't doing as well as we should be, given our soldiers' vastly superior firepower and training.

I've heard other numbers closer to 150,000 that I think are more reasonable. Still a lot of people dead fora rationale that proved false.

We're scraping the bottom of the propoganda barrel aren't we? A week and a half is a pretty quick turnaround for reposting previously posted fodder.

Hmmmmmmmm . . . .

OK, let's do this: I'll take Bush's figures. You take the figures referenced here. Then we'll see which set is closer to reality. Deal?

I like this conclusion from the linked article:

Quote:
655,000 is not a guess. It is the best estimate that we have to date of the human tragedy in Iraq.
OK, it's not a guess. It's an estimate. LOL
