Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Bush signs billforborder fence

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (Reuters) - President George W. Bush signed a law on Wednesday that will pay for hundreds of miles of new fences along the U.S.-Mexico border, a move against illegal immigration that Republicans had sought before next month's congressional elections.

An estimated 12 million illegal immigrants live in the United States, many of whom entered through the porous border with Mexico.
Mexico had strongly objected to the fence, which it saw as a slap in the face to efforts during President Vicente Fox's nearly completed six-year term to negotiate an agreement with Washington on immigration.

Mexico's Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez said the fences hurt bilateral relations. "Just the idea of a wall, a fence ... is an insult to good neighbors," he told a news conference on Wednesday.

President-elect Felipe Calderon said fences were not the solution to the illegal immigration.

Well, it's a start.

What's crazy is that this is something that in the long run really does matter, for our economy, safety, etc, and the press has barely covered it. They're too busy with the Foley crap, which in the long run doesn't matter at all.

How convenient.

Good start, definitely. They are trying to milk the Foley thing for all they can get, though they so easily forget they're casting stones from a very fragile house of glass & cards!

I think as voters really start to look @ the election, real issues like national security & border security will come again to the fore.

Huh?

This is a start, the wall would not be needed if we had been actively enforcing the laws on the books in regards to illegal immigrants for the last 30 years. The illegal immigrant problem was caused by both Democrats and Republicans over the last 30 years. Something needed to be done besides giving it lip service. There is still a long way to go on this.

There is no such thing as an "illegal immigrant" , you're either emigrating to here or invading our country . The difference is which door you enter through , the front or the back . Hammer the a-holes who hire *******s so that there are no jobs for them and the ******* problem will disappear all by itself . It's the nod and wink culture in the business world that started the problem , make them fix it .

Im a little confused after reading this.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15149231/

Quote:
GOP leaders have singled out the fence as one of the primary accomplishments of the recently completed session. Many lawmakers plan to highlight their $1.2 billion down payment on its construction as they campaign in the weeks before the midterm elections.
But shortly before recessing late Friday, the House and Senate gave the Bush administration leeway to distribute the money to a combination of projects -- not just the physical barrier along the southern border. The funds may also be spent on roads, technology and "tactical infrastructure" to support the Department of Homeland Security's preferred option of a "virtual fence."
Quote:
"It's one thing to authorize. It's another thing to actually appropriate the money and do it," said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.). The fine-print distinction between what Congress says it will do and what it actually pays for is a time-honored result of the checks and balances between lawmakers who oversee agencies and those who hold their purse strings.
Seriously, did we approve a 34.8 billion dollar fence thats been touted for months now or did we just approve a 1.2 billion dollar test for other equipment along the border? It sounds like now that the fence and money have been approved after months of hype theyre already changing thier story to involve a virtual fence, whatever the hell that is, road blocks, and lighting.I realize a actual fence may not be practical everywhere, but why has the fence idea been changed so dramatically in such a short time after being approved?Nothing good ever seems to come from giving the govt leeway with a few billion dollars to try out whatever they want.I thought this time thier was at least an actual plan in place for an actual barrier, not lighting and radar.
