RE: Quotes used to combat gun control,,,,,,Or so you thought,,,,
I'm a firm believer that the anti-gun/hunting crowd can only be effectively dealt with by using strictly the facts. Throwing around undocumented/untrue factoids only weakens ones arguments. Only using verifiable information, while pointing out the oppositions use of myths is the best way to win over folks who are undecided.

Seems like a good, nonpartisan website devoted to supporting the 2nd amnd. I wish I had found it years ago.
I actually had some of these quotes saved on my computer for future use against any anti-gunner's I might engage.
Yesterday, I searched one of the quotes on Google to see if there were any more of like kind - one of the top hits was this site - needless to say I have now edited my arsenal of pro-gun wisdom to include only valid quotes and info................... as far as I know that is,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Well, I see most of the problem here. Alot of people trust the internet. Why? I have no idea. They use search engines for most of thier arguments. They believe any news it spits out. I believe the internet is about the worst source to argue for or against these quotes. Sadly enough most people won't step foot into a library. Which still can have its problems with misquotes, but alot more trustable than the internet. Somehow or another snopes has gained so much respect and belief. Why? What academic source are they affilitated with? Nothing but stupid internet researching.
Just my opinion. I was talking with my wifes nephews on doing research papers on various subjects at HS level. Thier excuse for bad grade was they couldn't find enough information on the internet. I shook my head. They actually believe that the internet is all they got. At the library, I found without much trouble, 4 complete books on thier subject. 1000's of pages on. Unless their is money to be made, the internet doesn't scratch the surface of research.

Good points on the origins of these factoids Iff, BUT, as someone who taught college for 10 years, i can tell you that the emergence of the internet has led to a certain degree of laziness when it comes to quickly hunting up a few sources and taking them as gospel. Also, the internet has allowed such factoids to now spread far beyond those who read Soldier of Fortune or Playboy. That's why I rarely, if ever, cite websites. I prefer original, preferably peer-reviewed sources.
