Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Thai army chief leads coup while prime minister away

POSTED: 3:46 p.m. EDT, September 19, 2006
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/09/19/thailand.coup.rumor/index.html

BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) -- Tanks and troops patrolled Bangkok early Wednesday after the chief of Thailand's army said the military was taking control of the country.

Police were closing stores and directing traffic off Bangkok streets, residents told CNN via e-mail, but no violence was reported.

The coup against the government of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is being led by Thai army chief Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin and Thailand's opposition Party of Democratic Reform. Thaksin is in New York for the U.N. General Assembly meeting

Anyone else surprised by this?

There have been 17 coups in Thailand since World War II, and rumors of an 18th have been circulating around Bangkok in recent weeks as Thaksin battled considerable pressure to step down. This is the first coup since 1992, AP reported.
Sounds like they have coups like we have elections.

My father was among the Marines landed in Thailand in 1963 (or was it 1962) to help the government deal with a coup attempt. No real combat (he got that a few months later in Vietnam), but a hell of an experience for him.

Just VC at that time. It was a while before the NVA got in on the act.

The coup was reportedly bloodless and has the blessings of the King .
Apparently the entire Thai goobermint was corrupt and had to go , is there a lesson in there for us perhaps ?

that's the usual pattern in Latin America, the military decides things could be going better and decides to make a move. But then you end up with an equally corrupt or inept general running the show. Hopefully it will be different in T-land
