"Company officials had told employees in a series of meetings that layoff notices would be delivered electronically, spokeswoman Kay Jackson said. She said employees were invited to ask questions before Tuesday's notification on a company intranet site."
So they used electricity instead of paper. Same result. It eliminates the embarrassment of filing into a room to hear your name called as one who got temporarily canned.
I would rather have it that way. Our company has hada fewlayoffs since 2000, and we do the usual herding people out of the building, one set of people go one way and the other outside. Then we shock everybody like its a televised decisionfor American idol. As a person who has participated in a few, it isn't pretty. Goodness first time, people started crying, and it was aweful. A few times, people got upset and yelling. Radio at least warned and the people probably knew who they were before hand.
I Guess in the IT sector it is handled differently, with TRW now Nortrup Grumman each individual is called in by their supervisor and told why and when one on one. Heck we had a guy get in trouble because he called his group in, explained to them there was a lay off coing and told them if your name is on the white board you are getting laid off.
I guess an email is better then some factories where you get your paycheck and a pink slip in the same envelope.
Of course the worst type of lay offs I have ever heard of was workers showing up to work and the doors were locked with a notice of the lay off taped to the door!

You probably heard of Allied Signals. They did that lock the door with lay off taped thing several years ago. Actually Northorp up here in Linthicum, Md, did there mass layoff a few years ago rounding everybody up. I think its were we got the idea.
