Yeppers, Back in the day when it was called New France and so forth...in the nasty France and British days...
In 1763, as the Seven Years' War ended and New France came under British administration, England had no specific legislation legalizing slavery. Nonetheless, convention ruled, and neither the English criminal nor civil law introduced in Quebec provided any noteworthy restrictions against slavery. Indeed, 1763 brought no perceptible change in status for Quebec's 1,200 Blacks: they continued to be non-persons under the law; that is, they were property, to be used and transferred as their owners saw fit, and to be free only of legal rights.
