Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Your lunch meat will soon have a virus

[link]http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/08/18/edible.virus.ap/index.html[/link]

This is rather cool, but in my skeptical head, rather frightening at the same time.

Quote:
A mix of bacteria-killing viruses can be safely sprayed on cold cuts, hot dogs and sausages to combat common microbes that kill hundreds of people a year, federal health officials said Friday in granting the first-ever approval of viruses as a food additive.

The combination of six viruses is designed to be sprayed on ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, including sliced ham and turkey, said John Vazzana, president and chief executive officer of manufacturer Intralytix Inc.
Goes to show you, eat as much as you can out of your back yard, then you won't have to deal with the bugs associated with processed food. Far from practical I realize, but if you think about what's in our foods we buy, it would scare you.

That's wlld.

I read not long ago that the FDA does not require food producers to include labeling that informs the consumer that the product was genetically altered or manipulated.

I can't help but wonder if the explosion in American obesity is linked to the chemicals in our foods and fields.

Our grandchildren are going to be born with 3 noses and 7 ears.

But bacteria are what makes it taste so good! In fact, 9 out of 10 obese Americans prefer the full-bodied flavor of bacteria over that of the lighter virii.

I don't really needanother reason to avoid such garbage sold in supermarkets, but I guess I'll add this to the list.

You Sir, are correct. At least in the context of my humble meaningless opinion.

Transfats are partly responsible for this as is killers like synthetic sugar. Our foods (and scrips) are lousy with these things which many studies have shown to be a contributing factor for obesity.

I think BadshotBob nailed this one. Same for VC and his processed foods comment.

Bacteriophages have been used for years, nothing new. Just like they are being used in Genetherapy[/align]

"Genetically altered is a wide rope to throw since man has been altering genetics since the beginning of time. We've genetically bred beef cows to produce more meat, milk cows to produce more milk, drought and disease resistent/bug crops, and the list goes on and on. However, with science and the manipulation of genes in the lab, results no longer take 40 years to reach a desired goal/trait. Genetically altered food causing obesity???? Sure does....beef being bred to have more marbling(fat) in the meat to look more appealing on the shelf and better taste on the plate. I'm sure there are many other examples that have the same cause and effect. The thing that worries me more is something like the altered corn fiasco a few years back....corn that is grown to produce sterile seed crop. What whacko might end up in control of that???? As for bacteria, that aged beef and venison everyone loves so much.......hung out for 2 weeks at 42 degrees so the bacteria can do its thing to tenderize the meat. Bacteria and virus were massive killers of man years in the Middle Ages and it will be a bug of some sort that will be our undoing in the future. I, for one, am not going to sweat it and will enjoy every bacteria, virus dripping forkful!!!!!
