From South Carolina's budding immigrant population to the fast-rising number of Hispanics in Arkansas, minority groups make up an increasing share of the population in every state but one, according to figures released Tuesday by the Census Bureau.

Ban Canned Hunting. If you don't speak up against it you are part of the problem.
I made it back fine. I drove out on Sunday morning, so didn't have to deal with the hellish Montreal rush hour traffic like I did on Wednesday evening. I made it thru the border checkpoint in minutes even though I was told that it could take over an hour to get back to the U.S. I guess that they figured that somebody wearing a cowboy hat with a big chew of Red Man in his cheek wasn't a member of Al Qaeda. I just finished unpacking and found two cans of leftover Labatts Blue. So, I do have souvenirs[8D]

Most of my family is from WV and still live there. The fact is there is little or no work outside of the major cities and even then it is low paying. I don't understand their economics but they are not in good shape there for the average person. Most have found a way to get by, most kin own tons of land so they raise lots of sheep and cattle and manage just fine. I try to help out on my frequent trips to visit, spend money in their local shops knowing that I pay a little more, or buying the kids some new clothes. Most of the guys up there would work circles around a Mexican if they had the chance to work and they take great pride in the work. I would imagine the lack of work keeps most people out of the hills and that is just fine with me.
I hear ya USMC PMI, on a trip to VA last summer, I went on a day trip to WV over from Harrisonburg, drove up over the mountains, took a tour...awesome country there, awesome people too, treated me very well.
I stoppedto eatbreakfast at a place called Fat Boy's Pork Palace...and it had to be the best breakfast of country ham I have ever eaten.
I'd visit there again in a flash. Must be some good hunting in those hills. saw some small deer and a small black bear cub while driving through.
I never could figure out why the poverty in WV. In Canada and most of the western States, Mining and miners are some of the highest paid people in the highest paying industry. What gives?

Well as a person who left the WV/Ky hills due to unemployment, I understand that unemployment all too well. You get laid off like every year. Goverment regulations kept the strip mining down until the last few years. These days it isn't too bad to get a job in the strip mines, but I am settled now. Also its totally different mining in WV/Ky. Very low coal, and hard to extract. Most seams are only 3 feet. Out west they can go up to 10feet. Huge number of back injuries, and others. Its very difficult to go your whole life and be healthy in the mines. Also its frowned upon greatly to hire outsiders like mexicans when their is home grown folks needing a job. Lastly, the coal is running out. And quickly. The coal in those mountains is the best there is. Low sulfer, and awesome quality. So its been in demand for a long time.
Some of the best hunting land up there i what used to be open srtip mines. They level and replant, lots of pines and underbrush, the game flocks to these locations. More jobs can be had up there now but many folks are still driving hours to work each day and still end up getting laid off at least part of the year.
