Think Again, Around 1:00am August 11th three men purchased cell phones from the Wal-Mart store on M-81 near the corner of M-24 in Caro. Wal-Mart places a limit on the number of cell phones that can be purchased at once, that number is three. The three men allegedly bought 80 by purchasing them three at time so that an alert wouldn't be triggered by the cash register. They also paid cash.
An alert clerk grew suspicious and called Tuscola County central dispatch. The Caro Police Department sent a unit and stopped the rented van on M-81 just east of Caro. The suspects were headed towards Bad Axe on M-81 where there is another Super Wal-Mart.
The three men were described as being of Pakistani descent but live in Texas. Police say the three, ages 19, 22, and 23 appear to be naturalized citizens. One man was driving while the other two were in the back opening the phone packages with box cutters throwing the phones in one box, batteries in another and the packaging and phone charger in another container. The suspects had 1000 other cell phones in the van. There was also a bag of receipts showing that someone was in Wisconsin the day before

So were they gonna throw cell phones at people or what?sorry but your story seems to be lacking an important element somehow, does anyone know what they were gonna do with these ?

According to the paper, they are only guessing what they were doing.
The guys are claiming they were buying them to sell. At $20 for phone and charger and selling them to a wholesaler at $38 per phoneminus charger, etc.

Officials said the batteries could be used in making meth.
Maybe they were going to use the phones as bomb timers.
(1000+ of them? At 20 a pop, when you can only buy 3 at a time, then have someone who knows micro-electronic to convert them into timers, when you can by the IED standby Casio watch for $5 or even less in bulk and get them by the 100 ct case with no suspection??????????)

That they had all of these phones and what they went thru to get them, yes it's suspectious. To assume that it was to make 1000+ bombs or to raise money for terrorists just because they were middle-eastern, assinine.

I say making meth or selling to wholesaler to turn cash.

meth would be a good possibilty, I guesse im not knowledgable enough to know how a wholesaler could turn a profit off a phone that sells for that low of price, not saying I dont believe you, Im just to burned out from watching the kids to putthat much thought into it

but I just took that stuff about wholesalers from the newspaper article.

These disposable cell phones make great, difficult to track communication tools. One may track the conversations, however the disposability makes tracking the user very difficult. These phones (as can almost any cell phone) can be modified to use as a detonation trigger for devices - like bombs.

No, VC, we're not 100% safe because the US invaded Iraq, though it has helped. That & the terror surveillance measures in place have kept us from experiencing another major attack since 9-11. Reading your posts for years, I don't think you believe we will ever be 100% safe - nor do I. That said, I'd rather be as close as possible, & fighting the terrorists there offensively has gone a long way towards our not having to defend against attacks here.

The fight against terrorism will continue for a long time. I know that I have become more vigilant in looking for sources of the extremism, I keep my eyes open for signs and I will fight it if I hear talk of it or seeothers being vitimized by certain people's mentality....the rhetoric spewing garbage is clearly a sign,it's nature....it's a demon
