Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default What do you say we get rid of a few amendments?

Just happend to be reading through the constitution the other day, and saw some amendments that i think we should get rid of... they are the following:

AMENDMENT XVI

Passed by Congress July 2, 1909. Ratified February 3, 1913.

Note: Article I, section 9, of the Constitution was modified by amendment 16.

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

**Sound to me like we are slaves to the govt**

And this one:
AMENDMENT XVII

Passed by Congress May 13, 1912. Ratified April 8, 1913.

Note: Article I, section 3, of the Constitution was modified by the 17th amendment.

The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.

When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of such State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided, That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.

This amendment shall not be so construed as to affect the election or term of any Senator chosen before it becomes valid as part of the Constitution.

(senators used to be elected by the State govt, this took away alot of states rights and gave it to the fed gov)

I just think if we retrogressed some of our tax systems and election procedures we'd be better off. Anythoughts?

I'll be for getting rid of 16! I still like direct election of our senators.

I wouldn't mind redefining this one:

Quote:
Amendment VIII [ Annotations ]
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
It's far too vague , and punishment is cruel and unusual by nature . I don't want to get rid of this amendment , just clarify it better .

I don't think we need to get rid of this one. I do think there needs to be limitations. When they first debated this issue, a tax rate above 10% was unimaginable. The top marginal tax rate started at 7%. It's been all over since then. But it's at a ridiculously high level now at somewhere around 38%.

A lot of beancounters say that government should be run like a business. That being the case then they should offer the public something other than image and big words. They should have services and goods for us at reasonable prices. Not like oil comapnies and others that set their own rates and the government lets them. And not raise the rate just because they have to do a little work.
The average worker has to deal with rising cost out of their pockets. They don't go to their boss and say give me more money for less production. The public has to deal with it why can't the government??You would hear a lot of moaning and groaning if elected officals had to actually pay for most of the things they get for free. You want to fly to europe on a fact finding trip senator?? OK pay out of Your pocket not the publics'.

yea i guess if i could have my way i'd vote for a flat national sales tax. Only after abolishing our current tax structure. You could make arrangements for the poor so they dont pay as much, but it'd be the best thing our govt could do....

Imagine no corporate income taxes, and all the taxes paid along the way to production!
Imagine no capital gains taxes!! All the investments in the world would goto the US, we would litterally have all the money in the world...

Its never gonna happen, but i like to day dream bout it anyway.

There would be no problem if voters would take a little more time to educate themselves. But too many are swayed by party lines and special interests, and therefore they reduce the level of accountability.
