This concept (Morning after Pill) addresses a problem and reality, regardless of whether you believe in abortion or not. Although strict opponents to abortion would argue that a life is still being destroyed by taking this pill within 72 hours, many people would probably concede to this being a realistic solution to an ongoing issue. The problem with making this pill OTC instead of prescription under a doctor's supervision is that many irresponsible people will try to use it well after the 72-hour period of time and some people will use it and simply not get help when they have disastrous side effects. In short, the FDA is having to consider making their ruling or law to cover the dumbest segment of the population.

I could see having a prescription only version for those oopsie moments when other contraception methods are strongly suspected of having failed , but not OTC , and certainly not for minors . There aren't many circumstances where it could be used for anything but a precontraceptive anyway . At ERs they hand them out to rape victims to prevent unwanted conception , and I think nearly anyone could support that , but OTC ? I just can't see a reasonable need for that when other contraceptive forms are widely available already and probably a lot cheaper .

I'm on the fence on it myself. I know some who would be thinking of using it like a quick fix for a wild weekend, so OTC is not the best idea here. I also have 2 friends whom both had to go thru the testing and worry about pregnancy and disease after being raped and I definitly can see it's use in that circumstance.

But definitly not for minors, nor as a quick fix OTC. At the absolute minimum it needs to have a much higher age requirement, say 21, but I would be hesitant to not have any Physician involvement in this. I would rather see it as something prescribed via doctor or clinic, call-in's included.

OTC for something like this is dangerous - OTC hormones? Taking out the life debate, this kind of drug is not something to use without Dr.'s supervision.

its the easiest way to allow one to have unprotected sex without any consequences

young people will LOVE this drug - it takes away all personal responsibility and replaces it with a pill

Not so fast old lover of raw milk. The pill won't do anything to stop STD's so there are consequences. Now there are pills to bring you up, bring you down, help to become pregnant, help to prevent pregnancy, prolong the experience, lengthen the ummmm better not go there. You get the message. Too many pills and not enough time.

I've seen quite a few people say they don't think this is right.

I'm all for this being OTC. From personal experience, I can tell you getting a perscription on an emergency needed basis is not very easy. My wife and I had an occassion in which the condom broke. Mrs. Slice called her gyno who was on call. This gyno is against the morning after pills and any type of birth control, so when he called her back, he told her he'd have to call his colleague to call-in the prescription. So, 2 hours later, the colleague calls back and tells her she'll call in the prescription for her. 20 minutes later, the colleague calls back again to tell her that the pharmacy she called doesn't keep the pills in stock, so we had to pick another pharmacy. Long story short, 3 calls and 4 pharmacys later, we finally get the prescription called in.

I'm sorry, that's a joke. My wife and I are adults who can make decisions for ourselves. We are not teenagers. We are not using the pill as a our sole means of birth control. We were 2 married adults who had our first type of birth control fail on us. Having to call 2 doctors and many pharmacys in an emergency situation is a joke.

If the major arguement against making this OTC is that teenagers may be able to get it and won't use it correctly, then why not make it that you have to be 18+ to purchase it. Heck, I even have to show ID to prove I'm 18+ to purchase allergy medicine OTC anymore, so why not do this with the morning after pill. Will some people abuse this pill? I'm sure a few will, but show me a product in which some knucklehead out there doesn't abuse.
