Iowa will soon begin monitoring convicted child sex offenders via a GPS ankle bracelet , they already do so for parolees . Other states are considering the technology for public safety and cost containment reasons . Is this the right thing to do ?

With any technology like GPS, it can be used for good or bad. Keeping track of the Child sex offenders is a good thing. Like any technology, it's up to us to keep it from being abused.
You don't need a GPS to keep track of 'em if they are dead.
I'll second that.

In regards to criminals on parole and sex offenders having to wear GPS locators, great idea, they lost the right they had to rights when they commited thier crime!

On the one hand, I don't like it any more than I like a sex offender registry. Once someone has paid their debt to society, they are considered rehabilitated. As such, they should be able to fade into the background of society and live a peaceful life. Also, there are a lot of sex offenders, even child sex offenders, who are wrongly accused and convicted.
On the other hand, statistics show that those who commit these crimes have an 80% likelihood of re-offending. That's a powerful statistic, one that makes the sex offender registry and constant monitoring of sex offenders absolutely necessary.

It's a very powerful stat. I have seen 60 Minutes type interviews with offenders in jail who say flat out, "If you let me out, I will do it again." And they do. I truly believe that they are not rehabilitatable (is that a word?). And as long as this society continues to put up with this type of BS, you'd better keep a close eye on everything you love. Why we can't really get tough on serious crimes like this, I don't know. To me, child molestation and rape should be capital offenses.
