You picked a great one to use your first Veto on since becoming President...............................NOT!!!!!!! !!!!
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate voted Tuesday after two days of emotional debate to expand federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, sending the measure to President Bush for a promised veto that would be the first of his presidency.
The bill passed 63-37, four votes short of the two-thirds majority that would be needed to override Bush's veto. The president left little doubt he would reject the bill despite late appeals on its behalf from fellow Republicans Nancy Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
"The simple answer is he thinks murder's wrong," said White House spokesman Tony Snow. "The president is not going to get on the slippery slope of taking something living and making it dead for the purposes of scientific research."
Senate supporters of the bill likened that logic to opposition suffered by Galileo, Christopher Columbus and others who were rebuked in their time but vindicated later.
I'm glad he veto'ed this one. If it's true that a living thing must be killed to do this research, then it's wrong. Show me stem cell research that does not kill a living organism, and I'll be all for it.

You've never taken a prescription drug in your entire life ? Never worn clothing that contained petrochemically based dyes ? You don't eat ? Guess what ? All of those at some point involved testing on animals and eventually people . Better rethink your stance .
If they were advocating getting stem cells by killing full term babies or even zygotes I'd be against it too , but they advocating taking them from tissue that would otherwise hit the dumpster . Tissue is not a living thing as AM has pointed out before since it cannot sustain itself . In the case of fetal stem cells the fertilized eggs that produce them would be tossed in the trash no matter what , if they're going to be "killed" anyway then why not harvest what could turn out to be the greatest medical discovery of all time ? The minor strides they've made already show enormous promise , and nobody died as a result .

The Senate also passed two related measures - 100-0 in each case - that Bush was expected to sign into law.
One would encourage stem cell research using cells from sources other than embryos in an effort to cure diseases and treat injuries. The other would ban "fetal farming," the possibility of growing and aborting fetuses for research.
Those two bills were headed for a House vote later Tuesday. Bush was expected to sign them when he vetoes the embryonic stem cell research bill, as early as Wednesday.

Although at the same look, it appears that Kevin does[/b] have his head up his with this statement:

This in no way advocates killing full term or zygotes? I see that is does, Kev. How could it not contribute to or encourage abortion? And btw, the scrips and medicines as far as I know haven't been developed by murdering a person for research (that only takes place after the FDA approves the drugs [8D]).

Bob , fetal stem cells are harvested from surplus fertilized eggs left over from attempts to conceive a child via in vitro method , they aren't taken directly from the womb . At most they're a small clump of 6-10 cells which will be discarded anyway . The one or two fertilized eggs that will eventually become Jack and/or Jill are retained to become full term(hopefully) children , they're never endangered in any way . Nobody is discussing or advocating abortion or cloning here , just taking tissue that would otherwise be wasted and deriving possibly useful future treatments from it . Picture taking a scab that contains a small amount of tissue from a wound and harvesting cells from it that could hold the answer to Parkinson's disease or cancer . The tissue on that scab is undeniably human , but would never grow up to be another Badshotbob on it's own . Would you throw away that scab ?
