SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - A baby girl will need extensive surgery after being mauled by her family's pit bull in Santa Barbara.

Police Lieutenant Paul McCaffrey says the dog attacked the eleven-month-old yesterday afternoon inside their apartment.

The infant suffered bite wounds to her face, forehead, and scalp.

She was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital where she is listed in stable condition.

At the familys request, the dog was taken into custody by Santa Barbara Animal Control and euthanized.

McCaffrey says the eight-year old pit bull mix had no prior history of biting people.

He says the child's mother kept the dog at the girl's grandmother's house in Santa Barbara.

McCaffrey says yesterday was the first time the pit bull had been introduced to the infant.

BRP the one thing I will say about this is that drinking raw milk is safer for 11 month old children then the 8 year old family pit bull!!!

Charlie P - go through the news and you'll quickly see that pit bulls account for the majority of dog attacks. There is a reason for this.

My point is that a beagle would have had almost no chance of biting that girl. A basset hound= very minimal chance. A corgi - almost no chance. Many breeds = almost no chances of agressive behavior.

Somebreeds have high likelyhood of agressive behavior, and pit bull type dogs are at the top of that list.

False, if that girl had crawled up on a beagle while eating same thing could have happened very easily.

A basset hound= very minimal chance.

You should have told that to the Basset hound that tried to bite me yesterday and my Grandmothers that was one mean Basset hound.

Just try to back that one up. Any chained dog has a very good chance at being aggresive..

The Chihuahua is actually rated as the most vicious breed , pound for pound . The difference is that with a Chihuahua you can always stomp the little peckerhead to death .
