RE: should we whack north korea
I think this afternoon's failure of the long-range missile less than a minute into flight underscores the fact that North Korea's weapons claims are largely pomp and bluff. The American public simply won't support military action at this time without 100% proof that it is absolutely necessary.
On the other hand, North Korea does pose a threat against us. Whether they have a missile that will reach our soil right now or they will have such a missile in 10 years, the point is that they are actively pursuing that ability. Unfortunately, as was the case with Iraq, a preemptive strike is the only way to ensure that they never make good on their threats. Actually, I think that Kim Jong Il is more of a threat in the long run than Saddam. Saddam was ruthless, but not without common sense. Kim Jong Il is not only ruthless, but crazy enough to actually try to use WMDs against us.
North Korea obviously feels that American sentiment towards the war in Iraq will allow them to be able to get away with things at this time that they wouldn't be able to get away with at other times. They can flex their muscle without fear of retribution. Oh, they may suffer some economic sanctions, but the benefit far outweighs any potential sanctions in their opinion, I would imagine. Firing those missiles on our Independence Day holiday was obviously meant as an insult towards us. I certainly wouldn't complain if we launched some missiles into North Korea to take out their nuclear capabilities; I think we need to nip this in the bud and remind them who's boss. But I think we all know deep down that, barring something a lot more major than scuds being launched into the Sea of ***an, the U.S. isn't going to undertake another military campaign right now.
