After reading the marijuana thread, it got me thinking about Hemp.
It pisses me off that hemp is illegal. You can't get high off of it. Not possible. But because it's a distant relative of the marijuana plant, it's illegal. It would be so much better to make stuff out of hemp.
For example. Clothes used to be made from hemp. More durable, softer, holds colors better, cheaper. Paper used to be made from hemp. Cheaper, more readily renewable crops, our Constitution was written on hemp. Ropes used to be made from hemp. Shipping ropes still are. Stronger, cheaper, much more resistant to rotting, etc......................
Bottom line is that of all the products that both trees and hemp can make, hemp is the better and cheaper resource to use. Almost no one denies this! Hemp is not capable of producing THC, so you can't get high off of it. No one denies this! So why do we not use hemp?
My guess is the logging industry is the culprit. The real question is why do we allow this to continue?

From what I've read it isn't just the pulp industry , law enforcement is also against hemp because they still believe that you can hide the "good stuff" in a hemp field and get a saleable product back . You're also overlooking what is probably hemp's most important product , the seeds . Industrial hemp isn't just grown for fiber , a considerable amount of breeding was invested in the plant producing seed for it's oil and protein rich meal . The meal would be a very valuable food source for developing countries as well as here . Besides being edible the oil can yield any product normally made from petroleum other than gasoline . Hmmm ... Did I just find another smoking gun ?

I agree that hemp has may great uses. However if trees where not used for paper then we would still need millions of acres of farm land to grow it. Thereforetrees would be cleared to grow hemp. As it is now timber companies plant several trees for everyone they cut. They give us good places to hunt too. I think it could be tough putting a deer stand in a hemp plant. People seem to think that trees are cut and gone forever when that's simply not the truth.
If you look at Mt Saint Helen's you'll see one part of it now has lush growth and the other side is barren. This is because a timber co. that once owned it, planted millions of trees and is now a national park.

Only if you were fermenting it into alcohol , hemp has less than .1% THC by volume . Canabis sativa/indicacontains at least 2% THC even if no effort to improve it is made .,industrial hemp has practically no psychoactivity .

That's not really a concern. Hemp requires less land to produce the same amount of usable product as trees do. Also, Hemp regrows at a rate of 32 times as fast as trees. This means that you can get two to three harvest a year vs. one every 7 years for timber. Current timber lands could be converted to hemp crops also without hurting hunting lands. Hemp can be grown interspersed with trees, in fact they grow better in between other trees.
