Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day delivered on his government's promise to introduce an amendment to the Criminal Code. Passage of the new legislation, which will likely be voted on this fall, will eliminate the ill-fated long gun registry so that tax-dollars can be redirected to support increased border security and provide more funding for police and social service programs that will actually work to reduce crime.
"The list of chronic operation failures, contract anomalies, mismanaged budgets, accounting nightmares, privacy and security infringements, and just day-to-day bureaucratic incompetence surrounding the gun registry has beleaguered taxpayers for too long," said Reader, adding that it is encouraging that this government is moving quickly on the gun registry issue which the O.F.A.H. has helped to keep in the forefront for many years.
