Well we have been inundated by ads for a new Governor of Mich. and will soon be watching all the political crap for National elections. Have you ever wondered why all lawmakers have to be lawyers or very wealthy individuals. Why would these people give up very lucrative six figure salaries along with perks and bonuses to be a politician? Maybe because there is more money to be made in the corruption of politics than fighting corruption. I don't know why someone would want to live under the microscope of the public and media unless there were untold riches to be had. It's a shame an everyman can't get elected to office (not enough campaign or special interest money) and actually represent his constituents and fight for what they need and want. It's amazing how we pay taxes to fund their (politicians) retirement programs and healthcare, but can't help those who are in need. Seems like taxation with out representation to me. Any way just venting, but maybe we will stop and think when we next vote for that wealthy attorney.

Power , plain and simple .
BTW , they don't have to be lawyers , it's just that most of them are . Harry Truman was a clothing salesman before becoming POTUS .

Really didn't mean they HAVE to be lawyers, just so many of them are. Today a typical clothing salesman wouldn't stand much of a chance against todays' politician with their money and special interest groups. I am talking politics today not 60 years ago.

Because most of them have enormous egos. Besides, many are still making money. Just check out the tax return figures on these guys. Roll Call magazine puts out an issue on them every year.

We can't? Geeez.
The governments of this country spend hundreds of billions of dollars every year on hand-outs to people "in need." The fact is that we are building a society where a large and increasing percentage of the population is dependent on taxpayers. To say we aren't, "or can't" help people in need is nuts.
good points all. speaking as a lawyer and one who works in politics (but chose not to run for office this year) the reasons you see so many lawyers in politics are varied, but can i thinkbe explained in part by:
a. huge egos (got that right NC);
b. lawyers are more comfortable in the spotlight than many, and love em or hate em,can be polished speakers;
c.it's good for business-
1.every lawyer i know who ran for office said that, even when they lost, their client list expanded substantially;
2. many lower level elected offices are part time. lawyers may choose to run for the added income, and the medical/retirementbenefits often associated with public sector employment that he or she would not have access to if in solo practice;
d. politics is the law and the law is politics. the two get so intertwined, particularly on a local level, that i imagine to many it seems to be a logical progression.
I guess I need to explain further when I say give up their six figure incomes, that statement was truly meant as sarcasim due to the fact that many of these people tend to collect salaries or bonuses (stocks) while they feed at the public trough and continue to make even more money from special intrest groups. I am sure with their lucrativesalaries they should be able topay for healthcare and save for retirement with out the tax payer having to fund their golden years. I was not talking about the welfare state, but the cuts in educational spending, allowing corporations to file bankrupcy and denying pensions and stock funds that workers have built up over years. How about the plight of social security or the fact that they cut veterans benefits. Those are the people that need help, people that have worked and fought to make this country great are being abandoned by greedy politicians. I actually know someone that ran for a State office served one term and did not run again because he could make more being a lobbyist. It actually becomes amusing with term limits, watching these people run from office to office so they don't have to work in the private sector of business.

the actual remuneration is often not too high, but they can make it up in other ways. they are by and large completely out of touch with reality. their health insurance and retirement plans are top notch, funded by the taxpayer. they almost always insulate themselves from the effects of their own decisions.
