you have to press 1 for English because of dumba$$ politicians won't make it the official language of the United States.
What will making English our "official language" do? Nothing. If a company thinks it is beneficial to offer their services in Spanish, what's the big whoop? So you press "1" and go about your business.

I believe the idea is that you would automatically conduct your business in english unless you pressed 1 or another #.

I don't think it really matters if they declare English the official language or not. I don't mind pushing a button to hear the menu in English.
What irritates me is that it's not required to have a command of the English language to become a citizen. That's all I want. As long as the economy of the country, state, city, whatever, can support immigration, then I don't care who comes over. Just learn English, become a legal citizen, and don't force me to adopt your customs, and you're just as American as me.

On a side note, I think one of the major problems with this country today is the fact that you get an automated system on the phone at all! I don't want to "say yes or press 1" anymore. I want real people! I refuse to use the self check out lines in stores. I refuse to use the ATM machine if I can go inside.
When I conclude my business (whatever it may be) I want to hear "have a nice day" from a real person. I want to say it back to a person, not a machine.
O.K. I'm done.

or your 6 children.
Working at a grocery store part time, I'll never understand how anyone can have 6 kids, need $1,000 a month for foodstamps, and still drive a $40,000 suv with 20" rims and a dvd/subwoofer stereo system.

Command of english , both written and spoken , is required of all aliens entering this country for purpose of permanent residency as a naturalized citizen . Here's a list of the actual requirements: Requirements for citizenship
Part 6 is the language requirement .

I agree with NC, it is no big deal at all to me either, I would assume that when traveling overseas smart businesses that cater to business men and tourist offer "English" as an option in many transactions, heck a lot of middle eastern countries even have road signs in English, I haven't seen any in Spanish......yet.
