Today's sermon was about the Da Vinci code and I was a bit surprised at some of the things I learned. I've read the book but haven't seen the movie. I knew that the major premise of the novel (Jesus married Mary Magdalene and had children) was bunk and that some of the author's facts were BS but I was surprised to find out that his accuracy level is only about 15-20%. Very disappointing in a book that claims it's meticulously researched and accurate.
Apparently the current estimate is that 1 out of 5 adults in America have either read the book or seen the movie. I was shocked to find out that several million (I forget how many) have said the book or movie has "helped them" with their spiritual life.
I had no idea that so many people were being confused by this book and movie and wondered why so many churches had such a strong response. After finding out that so many people are using the book or movie to answer spiritual questions, I can now see why all christian churches have so much at stake with this book and movie.

I have not seen the movie or read the book. I have heard a lot of buzz about it, but it strikes me as one of those movies where I'll come out thinking I just wasted $10 and an hour of my life I'll never get back. Same for the book, only alot more wasted hours.

If you don't take the book's premise seriously and just want to enjoy a suspenseful book, it's pretty good fiction. I don't know that I'd waste $10 on seeing the movie though. I generally prefer to wait until the movies show up on the free channels as most movies simply aren't worth paying $10 to see.

Neither the book nor the movie appeal to me , and I hope I'm smart enough to run my own life without either . It's already made over 200 million without me anyway .

I've been reading Holy Blood, Holy Grail, the book that Brown was just aquitted of plagerizing. Aquittal or not, he filed the serial numbers off of everything I've read in it so far, and put it in his own stuff.
Da Vinci Code was just a novel, and a not very good one at that. I might buy the DVD when it hits the $5.50 bin at Walmart.
As for churches complaining about what is out there, I don't tell then how to worship, so I don't let them tell me what to read or watch.
From the few I have heard talk about helping themselves in their spiritual lives after having read the book or the movie, all have said that the book and movie strengthened their faith even more. I didn't see the movie or haven't read the novel..........my wife saw the movie and didn't really care for it that much. She says it upset her a little bit.
Charley, didn't Brown get acquitted of plagiarizing that novel? Did he walk on some technicality? I'd be curious to hear your opinion on this as I haven't read that other book.
As for churches addressing the issue, perhaps I didn't articulate it very well but the impression I got was that many churches were having different members ask them a lot of questions about the various premises of the book and thus responding to what was apparently a growing problem for their members. Also, I think some churches were upset at what some perceived as the movie industry trying to advertise that movie towards christians in particular.

Holy Blood, Holy Grail isn't a novel. Best term for it is a report on what the writer and two other researchers uncovered/deduced/best guessed.
I have no opinion on the veracity of the book, I wasn't there when the events took place. I won't rule them out thru faith, but I won't accept them at face value, either.
Brown was aquitted of plagerizing it. Tough to plagerize a report. His novel just happens to use and mention almost everything they covered, though. What an amazing coincedence!
I'd have to say that I've lost a lot of respect for Opie Taylor! At one time, I took the stance that if Christians wanted to see the movie, as a work of fiction, fine. After all, if they're not sound enough in their faith that they would let a movie like this sway them, then they probably aren't truly born again anyway. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this movie (and book) is nothing but pure blasphemy. I think Christians should be VERY careful about supporting blasphemy with the $$ they will spend at the box office or the bookstore.

I knew the book was a fiction writing that some folks thought was real. I know there was a lot of research put into the book as far as researching the claims that Christ got married and had children, this I have a feeling may have mislead a lot of folks, Christian and non-Christian alike that the book was factual.
The Discovery channel or History channel did a special on the book and tore the book to pieces using historical facts and not speculation and guess work.
