VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - In another in a series of notable pronouncements, religious broadcaster Pat Robertson says God told him storms and possibly a tsunami will hit America's coastline this year.
Robertson has made the predictions at least four times in the past two weeks on his news-and-talk television show "The 700 Club" on the Christian Broadcasting Network, which he founded.
Robertson said the revelations about this year's weather came to him during his annual personal prayer retreat in January.
"If I heard the Lord right about 2006, the coasts of America will be lashed by storms," Robertson said May 8. On Wednesday, he added, "There well may be something as bad as a tsunami in the Pacific Northwest."
Robertson has come under intense criticism in recent months for suggesting that American agents should assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke was divine retribution for Israel's pullout from the Gaza Strip.

It really makes me laugh when I see him sitting their with his eyes shut saying, someone with arthitis has just been healed and someone can now see etc. Who said "a fool and his money will soon be parted?"
Was it W.C. Fields?

I'm not sure why the media considers it "news" every time Pat Robertson makes these statements. The statements are made on his television show. Absurd statements? Possibly. But absurd statements are made every day on television and talk radio and I don't see them plastered all over the press. My opinion is that certain folks are delighting at the opportunity to make Christianity look bad because of statements made by one of the high-profile people within their religion.

"High profile" is the key phrase . It's really more a matter of Robertson shooting himself in the foot publicly than someone else using him to slam Chritianity , he begs for the attention and then goes haywire once he gets it. Falwell is not much better , but at least he picks his moments more carefully . Both are seriously out of touch with what this country is supposed to be , if it were left to them we'd be living in a theocracy rather than a democracy.
Storms lashing the coasts this year ? And at the very start of the annual hurricane season ? Well , what are the odds on that ? Deet duh dee !

I'm not sure I agree with that. Robertson makes most of these comments that are given so much attention on his television show, the 700 Club. He has regular interviews on national news programs that would give him more attention and exposure but doesn't seem to make so many of these statements there.
Honestly, I don't have a problem with the statements he makes. What I do have a problem with is his refusal to stand behind anything he says. The minute the criticism starts, he starts backtracking worse than a crawldad trying to get away from a smallmouth bass. "Now what I really meant was . . ." Of course, if he's claiming that God spoke to him and God really hasn't spoken to him . . . well, there's a serious issue there. As a Christian I won't start judging him, because that will be between him and God some day.

You also have to consider the venues , Ben. When he says these daffy things on his show he's playing to his own crowd , once in the national limelight he has to choose his words more carefully since he's far less likely to have them accepted at face value . Do you say things differently in the presence of friends than you do publicly ?
