NORWICH -- A former pastor accused of running off with a 15-year-old girl will be arraigned next week in Chenango County Court on 21 felony charges and two misdemeanors that were returned Wednesday by a Chenango County grand jury.
The indictment against 54-year-old Lewis J. Lee included 15 counts of felony third-degree rape, five counts of third-degree criminal act and one charge of custodial interference, all felonies. The grand jury also returned charges of endangering the welfare of a child and criminal contempt, both misdemeanors.
Elizabeth M. Thomsen left her family's Town of Columbus farm on March 18 to meet with Lee, former pastor of the Christian Baptist Church of Sherburne. The two traveled as far west as Wyoming and as far south as Tennessee.
Accompanied by Thomsen, Lee was arrested April 17 in Maryland on a federal warrant charging him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution and a New York warrant for first-degree custodial interference. Thomsen still professed her love for her former pastor after she was returned to her parents.
Assistant District Attorney Patrick Flanagan presented the case to the grand jury Wednesday. District Attorney Joseph A. McBride said the law prohibited him from identifying the number or names of those who presented testimony to the grand jury.
The grand jury indictments were presented to Supreme Court Justice Kevin M. Dowd of Sherburne in the absence of Chenango County Judge W. Howard Sullivan, who was unavailable.
McBride confirmed Lee was still in Broome County Jail under federal custody. Lee, who was represented by Diane M. DiStefano of Norwich, will be returned to Chenango County next week to be arraigned on the indictments before Sullivan, McBride said.
Lee had previously faced two counts each of third-degree rape and third-degree criminal sexual act and single counts of second-degree criminal contempt, endangering the welfare of a child and first-degree custodial interference. He also faces charges of contempt of court for violating an order of protection, fourth-degree stalking and trespassing.
Lee has pleaded innocent to four federal charges involving the girl.
